A newly created musical, 'Night Tale of Gangneung - Hongjang Story', will be staged on November 22-23 at the Gangneung Arts Center. This production, created by Art Company Haerang, reimagines a traditional Korean folktale set in the late Goryeo dynasty, where Hongjang, a gisaeng (female entertainer), and Bakshin, a local official, fall in love. The narrative, originally passed down through oral tradition, is known for its humorous elements involving a prank orchestrated by a character named Jounheul, which turns the mood from heartbreak to joy at the end. The musical highlights Hongjang as a protagonist who freely chooses her fate, showcasing her as a modern woman. Art Company Haerang is known for creating content that connects to traditional stories, such as the tale of Korea's first female militia leader, Yun Heesun. Tickets are available at 10,000 won for adults and 5,000 won for students at the Gangneung Arts Center. The performance includes vibrant music and choreography, aiming to attract young audiences with a blend of historical storytelling and modern artistry.
