A Night to Remember: Pyeongchang’s Hyoseok Culture Festival Calls Visitors into the Buckwheat-Blooming World of 'When the Buckwheat Blooms'

Pyeongchang’s annual Hyoseok Culture Festival (효석문화제) recreates the atmosphere of Lee Hyo-seok’s famous novella "When the Buckwheat Blooms" by transforming Bongpyeong’s buckwheat fields into a literary and sensory retreat from Sept 4–13, 2026. The festival—designated an honorary cultural tourism event—offers three themed zones: a Culture & Arts area with the Hyoseok Literature Museum and guided literary walks; an Experience area with participatory activities like rustic bridge crossings, bonfire leaf-burning, writing love postcards set to music, and a stamp tour; and a Festival area featuring folk performances, traditional market stalls, rice-cake pounding, and local foods. This year the county opens the museum and the Moonlight Hill (달빛 언덕) free of charge during the festival and reorganized viewing paths through the buckwheat fields to enhance visitors’ immersion. Organizers say the event blends nature and literature to help visitors heal, slow down, and rediscover simple joys under buckwheat blooms and starlight.
