Korea Tourism Organization analysis of three years of mobile, card and booking data shows leisure, performances and live sports increasingly determine overnight stays. Foreign visitors led growth—overall stays rose 5.1% while foreign stays jumped 29% versus domestic 1.9%—with high foreign shares in Incheon, Seoul, Jeju and Busan. Overnight stays expanded beyond main hubs into places like Pyeongchang, Andong and Gijang as transport and local stay experiences (e.g., traditional guesthouses) improved. Reservations for leisure-themed stays surged: golf-themed lodging +199.3%, hot springs (oncheon) +98.9%, waterparks +56.5%, while demand fell for private spa, pool villa and pet pensions. Weeks with concerts saw 16.4% more bookings; major K-pop tours drove foreign stays up 619.2% during concert weeks. Pro baseball game days raised stays by 14.5%, especially boosting non-capital regions. The report argues regions should link performances, sports and leisure with lodging, transport and local commerce to create distinct “one-night” reasons to stay.
