On Sept. 5 at 4 PM, the Kimpo Saudong community will present the 2nd annual “Sounds Linking Heaven” (천상을 잇는 소리) concert to reenact Kimpo Saudong’s traditional funeral music, Kimpo Saudong dajiso-ri (김포사우회다지소리). Organized by the Kimpo Saudong Dajiso-ri Preservation Society and hosted by Kimpo City, the free outdoor event at the Kimpo Cultural Center lawn opens with a local pungmul (풍물, traditional percussion ensemble) performance and follows with the preservation society’s presentation of the hoedajiso-ri (회다지소리, funeral chants/songs). The program aims to reintroduce the communal ritual of the bier procession (sangyeo, 상여) and its songs to citizens, record oral histories from elders, and carry out academic research to document and safeguard this disappearing funeral culture for future generations.
