Sound Sculptures: Lee Kwan-young Turns Voices and Waves into Light

Artist Lee Kwan-young’s solo exhibition “ECHOES” runs until Oct. 24 at JN Gallery in Gangnam, Seoul. The show presents five works that translate sound waveforms—from human voices to ocean surf—into luminous sculptural forms. Lee, who studied business and anthropology before becoming an artist, has spent over 20 years visualizing voices through sculpture, digital printing, jewelry and video. Pieces include PEACEMINUSONE, made from an interview with G-Dragon (K-pop star); “Wave Sound,” capturing the surf at Gangmun Beach in Gangneung; “Get Well,” based on his mother’s words and incorporating soil from her orchard; “Love,” featuring messages from 14 ambassadors’ spouses volunteering with the Korean Red Cross in their native languages; and “I Love You,” a duet of voices between the artist and his wife. Much of Lee’s work reflects his long engagement with loss, memory and the persistence of sound.
