K&L Museum will present South Korea’s first large-scale print exhibition of Cuban-born modernist Wifredo Lam, titled “Wifredo Lam: A New New World,” from August 30 to December 27. In collaboration with the Wifredo Lam Foundation and marking 140 years of Korea-France relations, the show spotlights Lam’s printmaking—58 prints and four rare artist books—revealing his hybrid imagery that fuses human, animal, plant and spiritual forms using techniques such as etching, lithography (lithography), and aquatint. The exhibition traces Lam’s cross-cultural aesthetics shaped by Afro-Caribbean, Chinese and European roots and his long collaboration with Italian printmaker Giorgio Upiglio. It also includes original artist books created with leading writers like Aimé Césaire and Gabriel García Márquez, reflecting Lam’s belief in the equal dialogue between literature and image. Organizers say the retrospective challenges Western-centered art histories and offers a timely reflection on cultural identity and exchange in Korea’s increasingly multicultural society.
