Coravin Lets You Pour Wine Without Removing the Cork, Preserving Bottles for Weeks to Years

I tested Coravin, a wine-preservation device that lets you pour wine without pulling the cork. The device uses a hollow needle to extract wine while injecting inert gas into the bottle, limiting oxygen contact so the remaining wine stays preserved. After removing the needle the natural cork reseals, and some Coravin “Timeless” models can preserve wine for years when well maintained. The “Pivot” model uses a stopper instead of piercing and is meant for simpler short-term storage (up to 4 weeks). There is a separate Coravin system for sparkling wines: a stopper plus regulated gas injection maintains bottle pressure and carbonation for up to 4 weeks, and one gas capsule can service multiple bottles. In a short trial, red and sparkling wine tasted essentially the same after two weeks in the fridge. Prices range roughly from 200,000 to 600,000 KRW, plus ongoing gas capsule costs, so the device is best suited for higher-end bottles, wine lovers, or businesses selling wine by the glass.
