Solace in Green and Personal Querencia: Two Korean Exhibitions Offering Rest

Two Korean art exhibitions emphasize rest as summer fades. In Wonju, Korean painter Kim Mi-ae’s solo show “Solace in Green” closed on the 23rd. Kim builds layers on traditional paper (jangji) using mixed grounding materials like red soil, sawdust, white pigment (hobun), and ink, then applies mineral pigments (bunchae) and earth colors to create points, lines, and planes; the translucence of the base and the layered, oil-like thickness deepen her sculptural visual language, offering viewers reflective comfort and a gentle farewell to summer. In Gangneung, Ahn Jae-hyun’s solo show “Querencia” runs through the 30th. “Querencia” refers to the place where a wounded bull in a bullring retreats to recover; Ahn uses sky, clouds, and flowing water not to depict landscapes but to invite meditation. Works such as “Flow·Meditation 26-3” layer vertical brushstrokes like air, accumulating echoes of past memories and present reverberations. Both exhibitions, supported by regional arts programs, provide serene spaces where visitors can pause, breathe, and find seasonal solace.
