Paju City in Gyeonggi Province has finished the first phase of a project to install landscape lighting around Gongneung Lake, turning it into a nighttime leisure spot. The project, part of the larger Gongneung tourist lighting initiative with a total budget of 1.8 billion won, is being carried out in two 1.1 km sections along the lake’s 2.2 km walking trail. Phase 1, funded partly by Gyeonggi-do and city funds (4억 원 each), completed lighting in early January and focused on modest, indirect illumination that complements the lake’s natural waterside environment, improves pedestrian safety, and raises visual quality. Planned features include improved walkway illumination, waterside indirect lighting, and lighting on footbridges. The remaining section, financed by the city (1 billion won), is scheduled for completion by June 2026 and will add sculptural elements and specialized lights to enhance daytime and nighttime appeal. Officials expect the enhanced nightscape to encourage longer visitor stays, boost tourism at Gongneung (Gongneung Tourist Site) and stimulate the local economy, while continuing phased efforts to create a safe, pleasant evening relaxation space.
