US swimming outlet Swimming World Magazine named South Korea’s top freestylers Hwang Sun-woo and Kim Woo-min as leading gold medal contenders for the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi–Nagoya. The piece noted 2026 sits between the Olympics and World Championships, raising the importance of regional meets as a stepping stone toward the 2028 LA Olympics. Hwang has shown strong form with a 4th-place finish in the 200m free at the 2023 World Championships (1:44.72) after underperforming at the 2024 Paris Olympics, while Kim earned Olympic bronze in the 400m free (Paris 2024) and followed with a World Championships bronze (3:42.60). Swimming World highlighted Korea’s depth in freestyle and cited both athletes as faces of Asian swimming, though rivals from Japan and China (including Murata Tatsuya and Chinese national meet winner Zhang Zanshuo) remain threats. The outlet judged that if Hwang and Kim hit their best times, they could vie for back-to-back Asian Games titles for Korea.
