Gwangju and South Jeollanam-do (Jeonnam) are hosting numerous year-end and New Year’s sunrise events across well-known spots such as Mokpo’s Yudalsan, Yeosu’s Hyangilam, and Haenam’s Ttangkkeut. On Dec. 31, Mokpo will hold a bell-ringing ceremony, performances and fireworks. Yeosu’s Hyangilam will feature a sunset ritual with wish candles, bell-ringing and fireworks, followed on Jan. 1 by the 30th Hyangilam Sunrise Festival with sunrise viewing and free tteokguk (rice cake soup) and hot packs. Suncheon’s Waon Beach will present a sunset festival with a bonfire ritual, wish ribbons, lantern-making and tteokguk sharing. Haenam’s Ttangkkeut and Osiano campground will offer countdowns, drum performances, sky lantern releases and other activities. Other coastal and mountain sites — including Boseong, Jindo, Goheung, Hwasun, Jangheung, Gangjin and Guryе — will host music, folk performances and food sharing. In Gwangju, recommended sunrise spots include Seochang Observatory, Mudeungsan National Park (famous for sunrise views from Seoseokdae/Ipseokdae), Geumdangsan and Sajik Park towers, the National Asia Culture Center, and Gwangju Songjeong Station, with community tteokguk distributions planned. Authorities urged visitors to enjoy safely.
