Hwayo, a premium Korean distilled soju maker, combines high-tech smart factory systems with traditional earthenware (onggi) aging to sharpen its global competitiveness. Founded 22 years ago, the company endured long losses before premium and home-drinking trends boosted sales from KRW 12.8 billion in 2020 to KRW 39.7 billion last year, with operating profit margins around 20%. Hwayo plans to reach KRW 100 billion in revenue by 2026 by expanding into 30+ export markets (U.S., U.K., Japan, Australia, Canada), tailoring portfolios like Hwayo25/41/53 and X.Premium, and launching RTD (ready-to-drink) and low-alcohol canned products. The firm stresses the cultural marketing of “K-spirits” and argues for tax reform from value-based to volume-based excise (moving from a 종가세 system to a 종량세 system) to improve price competitiveness. Leadership says growth target is about brand value as much as sales, and calls for industry-wide policy changes to help Korean distilled spirits gain global recognition.
