Cheongju, a city in Chungbuk, staged a string of new and diverse festivals in 2025 to boost tourism and local life. The third annual Cheongju Food Truck Festival (벚꽃과 함께하는) drew about 430,000 visitors along a 1 km stretch during cherry blossom season and supported reuse efforts by distributing nearly 97,000 reusable containers. A new “Midsummer Night’s Creepy Horror Festival” attracted 32,000 people with costumed locals, university performances and a popular horror trekking experience. The traditional “King Sejong and Chojeong Mineral Spring Festival” celebrated its 19th year with historical reenactments (어가행차), folk plays and lectures on Sejong and Hangul, drawing 161,000 visitors. Cheongju also launched a first “Gastronomy & Alcohol (주) Festa” showcasing local foods, traditional liquors and tastings, and a Dessert & Bakery Festa that welcomed 67,000 attendees. City officials aim to change Cheongju’s reputation as a quiet city by creating varied events that appeal across generations and attract national tourists.
