Uijeongbu City in Gyeonggi Province held a completion ceremony for the Howoncheon ecological stream restoration on October 31. The 136 billion won project (68 billion won from the province and 68 billion won from the city) aimed to restore the previously dry stream into a clean, living waterway. Over six years since 2020, the city implemented measures including ecological channel restoration, sewer pipe maintenance, installation of supply pipes for sustaining water, removal of invasive species, and creation of riverside ecological trails and an education center. The restored Howoncheon now supports water circulation, offers a pleasant riverside space for residents to walk and relax, and hosts an ecological education facility. Mayor Kim Dong-geun said the stream has been transformed from an inaccessible waterway to a welcoming public space, and the city will continue water quality management, ecological monitoring, and maintenance to keep the area safe and comfortable for citizens.
