Sonocam Gyeongju Unveiled as APEC Residence, Embracing 'Silla-style Rest'Creatrip Team
2 months ago
Sonocam Gyeongju, formerly SonoVel Gyeongju, has reopened after a 17-billion-won (1,700억 원) renovation and rebranding into a five-star hotel to serve as accommodation for leaders attending the 2025 APEC summit. The hotel features Korea’s largest presidential suite (569㎡, about 172 pyeong), traditional Korean design elements like moon jars and ondol (underfloor heating), a private office-style layout with a high-end Hestnes bed and meeting facilities, and dedicated catering and security for VIPs. The resort has shifted its identity from family waterpark to a wellness- and contemplation-focused destination: the former waterpark was replaced by a spa using mildly alkaline hot spring water from 680 m underground, including a dome “secret pool,” rain pool, and an outdoor infinity pool overlooking Bomun Lake. Public spaces emphasize local Silla heritage (the ancient Silla kingdom) with six F&B outlets using regional ingredients, a night-concept bar serving themed cocktails, and a quiet book café with 500 books and late-night reading sessions. The hotel will be closed to regular guests during APEC and aims to maintain limited capacity and tranquil experiences for couples, premium travelers, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) guests after the summit.
