In May 2023, Japan saw a record high in foreign visitors, with 3.69 million people visiting the country, marking a 21.5% increase compared to the same month last year. South Koreans were the top visitors, with 825,800 people, surpassing visitors from China, Taiwan, and the USA. The growth is attributed to new flight routes connecting South Korea with various Japanese cities. However, visitors from Hong Kong decreased by 11.2%, possibly due to rumors about potential natural disasters in Japan circulating on social media.
