Chungnam Shifts 1-Trillion-Won Dome Stadium Plan from Private Funding to Government Bid

Chungcheongnam-do province has changed its plan to build a large dome stadium near Cheonan-Asan KTX station from a private investment (민자사업) project to joining a government-funded competition for a sports-and-performance complex. The original proposal aimed to spend about 1 trillion won to build a 50,000-seat multipurpose dome by 2031 for baseball, football, K-pop concerts and large exhibitions. Officials say entering the Culture Ministry’s public contest is financially and politically safer and could avoid exclusion from a national project if the province pursued a private funding route. Chungnam will emphasize Cheonan-Asan station’s strong transport access as a competitive advantage and will refine candidate sites once the government releases detailed application criteria. The province says it will concentrate resources on the bid but has not yet decided whether it would revert to self-funded construction if not selected.
