From Taepyeongmu to Seungmu: Lee Cheol-jin Performs in Han Young-sook Style

Gusuljumeoni arts group will present "2026 Seven Days of Han Young-sook Style Lee Cheol-jin Dance: Husaeng Gaoe" from Sept 14–20 at Seonggyun Small Theater in Daehangno. The weeklong program features live-accompanied full-length performances of Han Young-sook style salpuri and seungmu, opening with Lee Cheol-jin’s Taepyeongmu and including Maensun Salpuri (bare-hand salpuri), salpuri, sanjo solo, and seungmu. Dancers such as Lee Cheol-jin, Myung Seong-hye, Choi Myeong-jin, Kwak Myung-ji, and Bae So-yeon appear; musical accompaniment includes janggo (hourglass drum), percussion, haegeum (two-stringed fiddle), daegeum (bamboo transverse flute), and piri (double-reed instrument). Taepyeongmu—created by Han Seong-jun inspired by Gyeonggi-do danggut—is known for fast footwork and delicate upper-body movement. Maensun Salpuri emphasizes spontaneous emotion and improvised gestures without using a towel. The title "Husaeng Gaoe" (後生可畏) expresses high expectations for the next generation of dancers. The event is hosted by Gusuljumeoni with support from the Korea Arts Center and cultural organizations.
