An experience-focused consumer trend is creating regional 'pilgrimage' spots across South Korea, driving tourism and local spending. Seoul’s Seongsu-dong has become a pop-up and experience marketing hub, where per-square-meter sales in some categories far exceed Gangnam’s. In Daejeon, visits tied to popular bakery Seongsimdang (a famous local bakery) raised tourist spending sharply—Jung-gu saw a 45% rise. Small cities also benefit: Kimcheon’s new Gimbap Festival (김밥축제) drew 150,000 visitors over two days, forcing limits on purchases, and was named a preliminary cultural tourism festival. Yangyang in Gangwon became a surfing pilgrimage with massive seasonal stays, and Yesan market in Chungnam revived youth-focused experiential commerce after renovations. Retailers say designing unique, memorable experiences will determine future brand success as consumers seek distinct activities rather than just products.
