10 Days to Yeosu World Islands Expo: From Concerns to Expectations

With 10 days until the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo, organizers are racing to turn public concerns into optimism. Critics highlighted preparation gaps after viral video footage and a government inspection increased scrutiny. Physical limits of island venues pose the biggest challenge: the main site at Dolsan-Jinmo has limited traffic capacity, and organizers forecast up to 32,630 vehicle movements on peak days. Measures include dispersed traffic routing, expanded public transport, shuttle buses, 22 temporary parking lots (9,951 spaces), variable message signs (VMS), and KTX/SRT train increases to Yeosu Expo Station. Local buses will be free and parking fees halved during the event. Safety steps cover reinforced tent structures, elevation and drainage to prevent flooding, and heat-response plans that can pause outdoor programming. Remaining worries include restroom availability, cleanliness, lodging and restaurant price gouging, crowd control, accessibility for people with disabilities, and marine litter. The organizing committee plans post-expo legacy use of theme islands, performance areas, and studies for long-term tourism links, proposals for a UN 'World Islands Day' (세계 섬의 날), and sustainable island tourism models. Organizers call for public support to showcase islands’ historical, ecological, cultural, and economic value.
