Director Lee Chang-dong on ‘Possible Love’: Two Couples Head to a Seaside Villa

Director Lee Chang-dong introduced his new film Possible Love at a press event in Mapo, Seoul, calling it a movie about what kinds of love are possible and what it takes to preserve them. The film, Lee’s first feature since Burning (8 years), stars veteran Korean actors Seol Kyung-gu, Jeon Do-yeon, Jo In-sung and Jo Yeo-jung. It follows two couples — a laid-off worker couple, Hoseok and Mi-ok, and documentary director Yeji with her wealthy husband Sang-woo — whose summer trip to Sang-woo’s West Coast villa (별장: seaside villa) brings buried desires and tensions to the surface. Inspired in part by a past large-scale corporate layoff and labor strike, Lee reworked the theme as life and labor changed around him. Possible Love will premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival next month, open in Korean cinemas on September 23, and stream on Netflix beginning in November.
