Sustainable Tourism Local Governments Call for Law to Create 'Sustainable Tourism Cities'

The Sustainable Tourism Local Governments Council visited the National Assembly to urge passage of an amendment to the Tourism Promotion Act to legally establish and operate "sustainable tourism cities." Council chair Kim Bora (Anseong mayor) met with the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee chair to request year‑end handling of the bill, originally co‑proposed by MPs in May and currently under review. The council also asked for budget support, administrative and financial systems to help local governments implement pilot projects, and ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Joint chair Kim Jeseon (Daejeon Jung-gu mayor) proposed expanding an "experimental exception" for foreign-only urban homestay businesses to Daejeon so limited domestic stays could be allowed, helping reuse vacant local spaces for longer-term stays. Founded in 2022, the council now includes 29 municipalities aiming to promote tourism that preserves culture and environment while boosting local economies and residents' quality of life.
