Park Seo-bo's Final White: Three Unsigned Works Open at New Museum

The Park Seo-bo Museum in Seoul has opened with an inaugural exhibition “Park Seo-bo and Huong Do Dinh: Emptiness and Fulfillment,” featuring 42 works—25 by Park Seo-bo and 17 by Vietnamese-French artist Huong Do Dinh. Centerpiece are three monumental late works from Park’s “White Myobeop” (백색 묘법) series (2023), each over 3 m high, which the artist kept private until his death and never signed. The museum’s light-filled white-cube galleries amplify these monochrome canvases (Park is a pioneer of “danseokhwa,” 단색화, Korean monochrome painting) and pair them with Do Dinh’s layered mineral-pigment canvases that echo Park’s meditative removal of the superfluous. The two artists’ mutual admiration traces back to a 2023 meeting that became Park’s last artistic exchange; the curators use that encounter to frame a dialogue across the exhibition. Separate spaces present Park’s earlier “stove myobeop” (아궁이 묘법) works—dark, ash-toned paintings inspired by hearth soot—and later pieces with bold color. The museum (ground to three floors, with outdoor gardens on each level) was founded by the Park Seo-bo Foundation to be an active art institution rather than a static shrine, holding some 3,000 works in the collection. The show runs through January 3 next year.
