The BBC reported that South Korea is experiencing a viral trend for the ‘Dubai chewy cookie’ (두바이 쫀득 쿠키, shortened locally as 두쫀쿠), a confection described as more like chewy rice cake than a cookie, filled with pistachio cream and knafeh pieces. The report notes rapid sales—sometimes hundreds sold in minutes—pushing up ingredient prices and leading some shops to limit purchases per customer. Not only bakeries but also diverse restaurants, including cold noodle (냉면) shops, have added the item, and a live map tracking store availability has emerged. Analysts cite the dessert’s bold, filled appearance and influencer exposure (notably K-pop idol Jang Wonyoung) as drivers of the craze; imitators with substitute fillings have also appeared.
