At the Asia Wine Trophy in Daejeon, Hungary’s Juliet Victor Vineyard Szamorodni (Tokaj) earned the top ‘Grand Gold’ honor for its richly textured sweet wine. Made from a blend of Furmint (55%), Yellow Muscat (28%) and Harslevelu (17%), the Szamorodni shows layered aromas of orchard blossom, mint and chamomile, with flavors of apricot, sea‑air dried fruit, sweet citrus, mineral and oak. Despite very high residual sugar (188.3 g/L), lively acidity (7.54 g/L) and 10.5% alcohol keep the wine balanced and refreshing. Tokaj wines are famed for “noble rot” (Botrytis-infected grapes, called Aszu berries) that concentrate sugars and create world-class sweet wines. The piece also highlights other gold winners at the competition, including Argentina’s Trapiche Visionaries Single Vineyard Malbec 2018, Powers Malbec 2022 (organic, Washington State), Chateau Cristi Barrel-Fermented Chardonnay from Moldova, Oregon’s Hyland Vineyard Pinot Noir, and several Italian whites from Villabella. The report notes the credibility of large international blind tastings and the importers bringing these wines to Korea.
