4 Different Kinds of Korean Fried Chicken that Everyone Must Try!
In addition, I heard that BBQ fried chicken recently launched 'cheese-ling chicken'. Lots of Korean chicken brands do not forget to add the word 'cheddar' or 'cheese chicken' on their menu. If you are curious about the taste, we recommend trying BHC fried chicken or Ne Ne Chicken! TONGDAK (KOREAN OLD STYLE CHICKEN) Most of the Korean fried chicken you find these days have a thicker crust. However, we still have thin-skinned fried chicken, which was more popular back in the 60s and 70s. We call this tongdak (Korean old-style chicken)! You might not find it as crispy compared to the newer ones, but there is a huge fan base of the old-style chicken from their tenderness. The huge success came from the retro drama, Reply 1988. This made the millennials try the old-style fried chicken and explore the new taste. The most well-known brand for old-style fried chicken is 'Norang Tongdak' (노랑통닭). This is a famous franchise in Korea for their own style of making old-style fried chicken. You can easily try their tasty chicken anywhere in Seoul; there are 90 stores opened in Seoul at the moment! Also, if you are concerned about the calories and health issues, this is a great option due to their low-sodium recipe. I have listed a few of their locations below, but you can search up 노랑통닭 at any time to find your nearest branch: Gangnam Branch Address: 서울특별시 서초구 서초동 1307 Dongdaemun Branch Address: 서울특별시 동대문구 회기동 60-51 1층 Busan Haeundae Branch Address: 부산 해운대구 구남로24번길 5 ROASTED CHICKEN The next type of chicken is roasted chicken. This is another healthy option for those chicken lovers; Korean fried chicken contains too much transfat and oil to consume them regularly. As the number of people paying much more attention to what they are eating, roasted chicken became another popular option. If you are looking for something not as greasy, take this suggestion! Once you decide to order roasted chicken, there are a few restaurants that are popular for this specific menu. One is 'Oppa Dak' (오빠닭) and the other one is 'Goobne Chicken' (굽네치킨). These franchise do not fry their chicken. Instead of frying, they roast them in the oven with great seasoning. I personally recommend 'Garlic Garlic Roasted Chicken' from Oppa Dak. This menu is very garlicky, just like the name of the menu. Also, if you decide to go with 'Goobne Chicken' I would recommend GOCHOO BASASAK without any hesitation. The crispy coating with a spicy blend of Korean cheongyang red pepper topping makes the chicken tastes even better. You will get addicted to this for sure! DAKGANGJEONG This is another popular type of fried chicken. This crispy and crunchy boneless chicken is popular street food, which I love! This type of fried chicken is different compared to the other ones. Usually, they are in a small box or in a bowl, coated with sweet/spicy sauce. Also, the additional delicate touch of sprinkled peanut powder enhances the flavor as well (You can always ask them to remove the nuts!). Since dakgangjeong is sweeter than the original chicken and more approachable, I would recommend this to any of your friends who are visiting Korea for the first time. Instagram @kimpanjoe The most popular dakgangjeong place in Seoul would be 'Kim Pan Joe Dakgangjeong' near the Sincheon Station. This place always prepares their chicken fresh, which is the key to the success of this restaurant. Address: 서울특별시 송파구 석촌호수로12길 21 On a side note, if you have a spare day or two in Korea, visit Sokcho for the best dakgangjeong in the country! Both Koreans and foreign visitors go to Sokcho, Gangwondo for dakgangjeong and you won't get disappointed. Joongang Dakgangjeong has the longest history among the many other stores in Sokcho! Their crispy and fresh fried chicken is packed in their special box, which is also designed to carry handy. Address: 강원도 속초시 중앙로147번길 16 There are many different kinds of fried chicken in Korea. I hope you get to try all of our suggestions and let us know which one was your favorite! 5 Best Korean Fried Chicken Brands
Price1BBQ1,636Golden Olive Chicken₩18,0002BHC1,469Prinkle₩18,0003Pelicana1,144Sweet and Sour Chicken₩18,0004Nene Chicken1,140Snowing Chicken₩17,0005KyoChon Chicken1,073Original Soy₩15,000 The table above shows the top five fried chicken franchise in Korea. Let's take a look at each brand and its popular items to order! Since BBQ have opened its business in 1995, the brand itself was more like a symbol of Korean fried chicken. Due to their long history and the quality of food, customer loyalty is higher than other brands; people would still order their food but complain about their price and extra delivery fee. Fun fact: did you know that BBQ stands for Best of Best Quality? Golden Olive Chicken The most popular menu from BBQ is the Golden Olive Chicken. The recipe for this chicken is straight forward. Their main ingredient is high-quality extra-virgin olive oil and the special powder that gives their unique BBQ flavor. It's crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. You can't not love this! If you haven't tried Korean fried chicken, this is your first place to check. BHC opened in 1997 with the name of Byeol Hana Chicken (Single Star Chicken) but changed its name to BHC in 2000. In 2004, when the Avian Influenza hit the food industry, BHC got badly affected as well and got acquired by BBQ for a short time. After nine years, it got acquired yet again but by Citi Group, a private equity fund of US stakeholders. BHC stands out among the other brands from their interesting menus. Their new menu is always special enough to draw consumer's attention! For instance, Prinkle Chicken is a fried chicken with magic seasoning powder and its sauce. Matcho King is a soy sauce-based chicken with a generous amount of toppings of spicy pepper. Another popular menu is Curry Queen, which gives you a unique curry flavor that is very addicting. They often release new menus which becomes a big hit! Prinkle BHC's steady seller would definitely be Prinkle. The seasoning that is on top of the chicken has the flavor of cheddar cheese, garlic, and onion. Eating the chicken itself is good, but the best part comes when you try with the cheese & yogurt sauce. (You need to order this on the side for ₩1,500, but this will be worth your money for sure!) You will taste the sweetness and savoriness at the same time! Are you a big fan of cheese? Then I highly recommend trying Prinkle. Also, if you are ordering with a big friend group, I recommend trying their sides as well. Their side menus are an extension of Prinkle Chicken: the seasoning powder is on top of the food. yum! They offer corn dogs, cheese balls, french fries and so-dduk (sausage and rice cake). #3 PELICANA Pelicana opened business in 1982. This is one of the brands that came up with the idea of chicken in sweet and sour sauce, and we usually call this brand as the original of Korean fried chicken. They release their new menu from time to time, but nothing has surpassed their original and sweet and sour sauce chicken. With its long brand history, Pelicana has more dedicated customers than the others. Seasoned Fried Chicken A bite after Pelicana's sweet and sour chicken, you will notice that there isn't much of specialty. However, the perfect ratio of garlic, gochujang (pepper paste), and ketchup make the chicken worth the money. I personally go for Pelicana's sweet and sour chicken if I crave any! Ne Ne Chicken started the business in 1995. They started their business just like any other franchise, but three special features made the business and stand out among countless fried chicken franchises. First of all, their packaging was sensational. During that time, there was nothing like Ne Ne's take-out boxes. Their exterior reminded me of a pizza box, but when you open, the neat set up of chicken, pickled reddish, and drinks were all in the same box. Nowadays, it's common to see something like this, but this was a revolution about 10 years ago. Another key to success for Ne Ne was choosing the right person for their celebrity endorsement strategy. Fried chicken industry in Korea is well-known for using celebrity branding to the max. Ne Ne used Yoo Jae-seok as their model for 12 years. If you don't know who Yoo Jae-seok is, he is a top comedian in Korea who hosted numbers of popular shows, such as Infinite Challenge, Running Man, and Happy Together. He is the type of celebrity who is liked by everyone, so this was a great opportunity for Ne Ne to do a positive celebrity endorsement strategy. At last but not least, Ne Ne's chicken is tasty. They are well-known for their Pa-dak(Green Onion Chicken) and Snowing Chicken! I will explain in detail below. Padak (Green Onion Chicken) You can only experience padak from Korean culture. It's that unique. With original fried chicken in the bottom, you put sliced green onions on top with the oriental sauce. The combination of green onion and the oriental sauce tastes refreshing. You must try this! Snowing Chicken Snowing Chicken is original fried chicken with special cheese powder sprinkled on top. Just like it's snowing from the sky! The combination of the rich cheese seasoning and the crispiness of the fried chicken is amazing. However, note that some people might find this too much due to the seasoning, which can be hit-or-miss. There are three flavors available for snowing: cheese, vegetables, and spicy. The picture above is the newest spicy flavor! BHC's Prinkle and Ne Ne's Snowing gets compared often, so why don't you try both and rate them? Found in 1991, Kyochon is famous for its soy sauce chicken. A few of the suggestions that I have made earlier are more popular among the younger generations, but this soy sauce chicken is the best seller for all ages. Some people find KyoChon chicken has a smaller portion compared to the other brands, but it's because of their thin breading and stack them all together in the box. Original Soy Soy sauce chicken has become popular over the years, but nothing can compare to KyoChon. I personally love soy chicken and I got to try most of the brands, but KyoChon still wins among them. The chicken is fried to a crisp, and then the garlic-based soy sauce is carefully applied to each piece with a brush. Soy chicken is great because unlike other flavors, you don't need to eat it hot for it to be delicious. If you only have one chance to eat chicken in Korea, I'd recommend KyoChon. Soy Original + Red Original Half and Half My go-to menu from KyoChon is the soy original and red original. The soy is good but can be a bit too much when you only order this flavor only. I recommend ordering other flavors that are made with Korean red spicy peppers, garlic, and honey, which is called red original. You can order half-and-half of both, just like the picture above. Make sure you try both flavors of KyoChon! GETTING YOUR CHICKEN DELIVERED IN KOREA Locals order their fried chicken with a touch of their phone. If you're looking to order fried chicken delivery in English, we've got you covered! : This brand, although not in the Big 5 in Korea, is renowned for its delicious roast chicken. : Many go to this fast food eatery for chicken burgers, but it actually started off as a fried chicken franchise. Their fried chicken is worth a try! How did you like our recommendations today? How many have you tried among these five brands? I hope you can try some more of the Korean Fried Chicken during your stay. Have a good fried chicken time If you have any questions or suggestions, contact us at help@creatrip.com....

Chicken brands recommendation
used by each Korean chicken brand are different. ✔ Kyochon When it comes to Korean chicken, most people think of Kyochon chicken. Among all the chicken parts, Kyochon mainly used the thighs and chicken breast. Did you know this? But I have to say that there are quite a lot of drumsticks when you order a chicken from Kyochon, which must be great for people who like this part. ✔ NENE Chicken NENE Chicken was also mentioned, and the main part used was the chicken breast. I personally enjoy NENE, and I agree that there aren't many legs in it. People who prefer the drumsticks may want to exclude NENE from their options as chicken breasts are the main focus here. For those people, Kyochon would be a better option. But more specifically, Nene was mentioned for its usage of chicken buttocks, quite unique right? ✔ BHC BHC was told to use both chicken breasts and chicken legs mainly, similar to Kyochon. I actually ordered it a few times, and it was true, since at least the proportion of legs was more than NENE. I'm not entirely sure about this, but because BHC uses a lot of legs, it was a good alternative to a proper meal. It's not so stuffy like when there's a lot of chicken breasts. ✔ BBQ Chicken BBQ chicken may be less popular for tourists, but it is also very famous in Korea. BBQ was remarked for its usage of hind legs. They are very delicious. The texture is something in between the chicken thighs and the chicken breasts. It's really chewy, and my personal favourite Therefore, you might think that you only get a small portion when you order from BBQ , but in fact, it uses mainly the small parts of a chicken, so it is indeed a smaller meal, but the quantity is compensated by the quality since it's Amazing. It's no wonder that BBQ is ranked first place in Korea for having the most branches. (1,659 stores nationwide). ✔ Other Chicken Brands As you've already seen from the pic, there's information on other brand recommendation according to your preferences. It can be a good reference for you. * Thighs : GoobNe Chicken(굽네치킨), Toreore Chicken (또래오래) * Half & half balance of thighs and breasts : Pelicana (페리카나) *3rd place in market share * Breasts : Hosigi (호식이) * Overall : MEXICANA Of course, this is based on big data analysis, so it's just a reference. However, those who like to eat chicken drumsticks really need to avoid the specifically named brands or order a combination of multiple brands to eat with more satisfaction. A Deeper Dive Into The Fast Delivery Service In Korea
morning delivery in Seoul and the metropolitan area, but Coupang offers same-day delivery all over the country except for only a small number of areas. This is possible since Coupang has its own 7 distribution centers across the country! Source: Coupang Coupang also has a membership of 2,900 won per month called Rocket Wow. Rocket Fresh is a delivery service that can only be used if they are subscribers of Rocket Wow. However, if you have the Rocket Wow membership, you can use Rocket shipping for FREE without a minimum order, so if you frequently order things from Coupang, Rocket Wow membership sounds like a great deal right? MARKET KURLY Market Kurly is a Korean online shopping website that specializes in fresh food. Because they focus on the quality of the foods, it's well-known for having high-quality ingredients. It is said that women in their 20s to 40s who are health-conscious use this the most. I even know a few people in my network that like to use this platform when ordering their food. Standard Delivery PRICE (KRW)Shipping Fee3,000 Free ShippingOrders above 40,000TIMEOrder DeadlineBefore 20:00Arrival TimeNext day before 24:00 Early Morning Delivery PRICE (KRW)Shipping Fee3,000Free ShippingOrders above 40,000TIMEOrder DeadlineBefore 23:00 Arrival TimeNext day before 07:00 The early morning delivery service is similar to Coupang's Rocket Fresh early morning delivery. In fact, Market Kurly's early morning delivery was the first to attempt this quick delivery method in Korea. However, since early morning delivery service is only possible in the Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon areas, the other provinces can only use their standard delivery service. But even the standard shipping is quite fast so the satisfaction rate is still high. E-MART (SSG.COM) SSG is an online mall of E-Mart, a major supermarket in Korea. Products that are sold in stores can all be purchased here. You can get all your groceries done in the comfort of your own home! Regions, where early morning delivery is not available, can use the standard SSG delivery service. Source: E-Mart Shinsegae's greatest advantage is that you can reserve the date and time of your delivery. You can select a date and time within 5 days of your order between 06:00-22:00. You can receive the freshest food at the time and date of your choice! PROS What are the benefits of fast delivery services? Let's find out! 1. QUICK AND CONVENIENT The biggest advantage of the delivery systems in Korea is that it's quick and convenient! In most cases, you can get everything from groceries to huge appliances and furniture in one day. Especially for food, when you go to the supermarket after work there are only leftovers that are sometimes poor in quality. Korea's fresh food delivery system allows you to receive the freshest foods before you head to work. I think this is the greatest advantage for most people in cities that are always on the go! 2. AFFORDABLE The shipping fees usually range from 2,500 won to 3,000 won. There's only an additional fee that may be applied when you order heavy items like furniture or huge appliances! However, as you can see from the graph above, Coupang has free shipping as long as the minimum order amount is exceeded. Market Kurly and E-Mart have a standard shipping fee of 3,000 won but if you order more than 40,000 won you can receive free shipping as well! Even early morning delivery or same-day delivery is available at no additional shipping costs. 3. CONTACT-FREE DELIVERY One of the most unique things about delivery in Korea is that you don't need to be there in person to receive your package. When you place your order, you can put in the location of where you'd like to receive the package, and then you can go pick it up whenever you want. Especially since the coronavirus, this has become the most preferred way of delivery just like the photo above where the delivery man drops off the package right in front of the door to eliminate any physical contact. There are many CCTV cameras in Korea and there is a high civic awareness that you shouldn't take other people's things so theft of parcel delivery is not common for this method to be widely used. When the delivery is made, you will receive a notification via text or within the app. After confirming that the delivery has been completed, there is no need to meet the delivery man, just open the door slightly and bring your package in! 4. ECO-FRIENDLY Source: Coupang Recently, more people are conscious about the environment and trying to lead a sustainable lifestyle. For this reason, large companies have been pursuing eco-friendly delivery. Sometimes when you order something, there's a lot of unnecessary trash. Whenever I receive an order, I always felt guilty seeing not only the box it gets delivered in but also all the wrappers that comes in the box to protect the package. The companies I introduced above provide eco-friendly delivery so you can frequently shop there without feeling guilty! Source: E-Mart Coupang's Rocket delivery and E-Mart's early morning delivery use a cooling bag named "Fresh Bag" and "I'll Be Bag" to deliver their food. As the name suggests "Fresh Bag" and "I'll Be (Back) Bag" allows you to receive fresh food. Also, after receiving the product you can store the bag away and the next time you make an order, you can leave it outside your door for the delivery man to pick it up so it's super convenient! Source: Market Kurly Market Kurly launched the "All Paper Challenge" in 2019 to change their shipping materials to 100% recyclable materials. They use paper boxes and paper tapes, paper cushioning material instead of plastic cushioning material, and water packs wrapped in paper instead of ice packs. They experimented a lot to make sure that their eco-friendly packaging can keep the foods fresh so you can be assured. With this challenge, they have so far managed to save a total of 4831 tons of plastic in one year! Isn't that amazing? CONS What bad could come from speedy delivery services? From delivery errors to working conditions, the list doesn't stay short. 1. DELIVERY ERROR AND DELAYS The biggest issue with same-day delivery and early morning delivery is that there are sometimes errors and delays. There are cases of items being delivered to the wrong address, the wrong package arriving, or deliveries not arriving on time. Source: Coupang Newsroom Many companies, including the three I mentioned above, provide same-day and early morning delivery services. In fact, it has only been around 5 years since this delivery method was first launched. In addition, as the number of orders exploded from last year's coronavirus, overloaded distribution centers have made this a serious problem. Source: Coupang Newsroom Same-day delivery and early morning delivery markets have grown at a rapid speed in such a short period of time, so it's no surprise that these problems arise. In order to provide a better service, companies need to establish specific compensation plans for customers that may have issues with their order and employ more people to prevent this issue from happening. 2. COMPANY'S ARROGANT ATTITUDE Gahp-jil (갑질) refers to the bossy and arrogant attitude of a person or group that has the upper hand over the other. This kind of incident is quite common in Korean society. It is said that companies that provide same-day or early morning delivery often treat their workers horribly. In particular, news broke out that Market Kurly has created a blacklist for some of their workers. Market Kurly released a statement that the blacklist was created to filter out workers who didn't work diligently. But according to the workers that were blacklisted, it was a form of retaliation in order to silence them. For example, one worker reported a manager of Market Kurly for poor treatment and sexual misconduct but ended up being blacklisted. Because of these incidences, it is said that workers aren't able to publicly come forward about recent hygiene issues such as rats being discovered around their work-site allegedly. Source: Byline Network Above all, it's shocking to know that rats were discovered around Market Kurly's distribution center! However, Market Kurly is denying its allegations. I don't think it's right to blacklist their workers without listening to their issues and opinions. I think it's a tough issue since we can't fully know if the allegations are true or not! 3. LABOR CONDITIONS OF DELIVERY WORKERS There is a huge problem with the delivery worker's labor conditions. Delivery workers in Korea have always suffered from an excessive amount of work. However, with the overwhelming increase in shipments ever since the coronavirus, it was revealed that in 2020, 16 workers died after working too hard for too long without rest. In fact, there are 16 people that are known to the media, but it is estimated that there are much more deaths that have occurred. There are also many cases of workers who have sadly taken their own lives. For these reasons, the working conditions are a major problem. Contrary to what we might think, delivery workers don't just make deliveries but they also sort the packages in the delivery zone and send them to sub-terminals. They usually work in the early mornings and sort the shipments until about 2-3 PM, then they make their deliveries from night to dawn. It is also reported that they don't even get paid for the hours when they're sorting the packages. Kim, a delivery worker who unfortunately passed last year, is said to have delivered around 200 to 300 shipments a day the week before and made deliveries until dawn. Source: Hani.co.kr In January 2021, an agreement was reached to prevent delivery men from being overworked. The delivery companies will now be in charge of sorting the shipment, and the delivery workers will work a maximum of 12 hours a day, 60 hours a week. However, since the companies that do early morning deliveries didn't participate in this agreement, early morning deliveries will continue. Some of my peers who are highly conscious of the harmful working conditions of these delivery workers try to stay away from early morning delivery. Now that I know that delivery workers may suffer for my convenience, it feels quite cruel to take advantage of these services. Today we learned about the fast delivery service that's available in Korea. What are your thoughts? Is it different or similar to your country? With the rapid development of delivery services, our lives are becoming much more convenient but at the same time, it seems that so many suffer from poor working conditions. We hope that the working conditions will improve soon so that the workers can be taken care of while we use these services! I'll be back with more informative content next time, thank you for reading!...
