Yeonnam Bangagan | A Multi-Storey Cafe With A Luxurious Yet Homey Vibe
Try Their Healthier Approach To Coffee Beverages Made With Locally-Harvested Grains.
Just minutes from Hongik University Station in the calmer Yeonnamdong area, sits a two-storey house that functions as a cafe, a library and a showroom. The small courtyard in the front has a classic suburban residential vibe, the black sign at the front being the only indicator of its commercial functions.
You'll be greeted by the pastries on display and the counter when you walk in. On one side of the wall, you'll see locally produced goods like sesame oil and salt for sale as well.
It's usually good to grab a table first especially at popular local cafes like Yeonnam Bangagan. The first and second floors hold multiple rooms with tables and chairs, all of different materials and colours, so pick and choose one that suits your liking.
The first floor has nice floor to ceiling windows that let plenty of lights in while overlooking the green scenery of Yeontral Park (what locals refer to the Gyeongui Line Forest). Yeonnamdong is whimsical in a way that although it's only minutes from the bustles of Hongdae, it maintains its quiet and calm close to nature.
Looking down to the first floor from the second floor will make you feel like 'you've stepped into a wealthy friend's house' as my charming friend would put it! The long chandeliers adds luxury to the space while the wide wooden finishes give it a warm, homelike vibe.
The floor to ceiling windows on the second floor and the patio outside boast views of Yeontral Park from a different angle. Such a perfect place for a cup of java!
Many rooms were already filled with customers sipping on their beverages and chatting so I didn't get a change to take photos. We got a table by the window that looks out to the park. The windows kind of made me feel like I was in a jail cell but the calming view, high ceilings and tall bookshelves made up for it.
Feel free to browse around the books available for reads throughout the place. Some of them are for sale and some are free to read on the spot. Most of the books are in Korean but some picture books that feature works of local photographers are worth checking out!
Bangagan Coffee (₩6,000)
This Yeonnam Bangagan specialty features coffee finished with a thick layer of multigrain cream on top. The grains add a deep flavour to the coffee beverage while the dense, fluffy cream adds a hint of sweetness.
Americano (₩5,000)
A refreshing sip of iced americano with a sour kick was a great choice for a humid summer's day.
The basement floor consists of small shops that sell merchandise of local designers and art exhibitions. The displays change from time to time, too.
Yeonnam Bangagan's tranquil, cozy atmosphere is the perfect stop-by for those in Hongdae whether you're looking for a place for a unique cup of coffee, a quiet space with books or artistic inspirations.
