If you want a special experience in Bukchon, try making your own norigae at Danha Hanbok. You can choose beautiful materials to create a norigae or decorate a pouch with gold and silver foil. It’s a great way to enjoy Korean tradition and take home a unique souvenir!

Our Visit

Today, I visited 'Dannah Hanbok' near Anguk Station, Gyeongbokgung Palace, to make norigae and pouches as a unique experience in Bukchon.  You can not only see traditional Korean accessories like norigae, but also try printing traditional patterns with gold and silver foil directly onto pouches. You can make your own unique accessories using the materials you want!

Various materials for nori-gae accessories are on display at the site. You can choose basic materials worth 4,000 won for making Norigae. If you want to make a norigae with a wider variety of materials, you can pay an additional fee on-site.

I made a purple norigae, and my friend went with a pink norigae. The beautiful pendants and beads that can only be seen at Danha are so luxurious and lovely that it was really hard to choose. When you're not sure how to choose, you can refer to the sample above.

If you have chosen all the ingredients, it's time to make it yourself.  The workstation is already set up with materials and tools.

We took the materials chosen by the editors and roughly laid them out to pre-plan how to make the norigae. It's okay if you don't know how to arrange it to make it look more beautiful. The teacher will kindly help you from the side.

Most of the process involves directly fitting the O-ring, but it takes more effort than you might think. So it's much easier to work using a ring to make it easier to insert the O-ring.

Hold both sides of the O-ring with pliers and twist gently to open it—avoid pulling sideways to keep its shape. Insert your decoration, then twist it back to close. The instructor will guide you, so no need to worry!

This is the completed norigae! Isn't it really beautiful? It's okay to hang a norigae on a bag or keyholder. It looks good even if you attach it to a hanbok instead of using it like a keychain.

Next, I embroidered traditional Korean patterns on a pouch. Basically, you can choose materials worth 8,000 won. It was hard to choose because there were so many cute patches ready.

Next, I chose gold and silver foil decorated with traditional patterns. There are various sizes and patterns. On this day, the editor chose floral gold foil that matches the pink pouch.

Using quality ingredients, complete the final touches at the workbench. I tried placing the materials directly where I wanted them.

The teacher demonstrates how you can apply gold leaf and silver leaf, teacher. After listening to the explanation and practicing, you will proceed to work on the pouch directly.

Place the gold or silver foil pattern on the fabric, iron for about 10 seconds, and let it cool. Slowly peel it off, and the design will stay in place. Be careful, as the iron gets hot! Children under 10 should be accompanied by a guardian.

I tried attaching the gold foil to the pouch just as we practiced. Be careful not to leave the iron on too long, or the foil may melt and affect the design. When peeling it off, go slowly to keep the pattern intact.

First, if you have attached gold foil and a patch, then second, overlay a thin fabric on top and finish the task. You can achieve a more subtle and natural look.

I made it just like the Daenggi pouch. The purple ribbon has a silver traditional pattern engraved on it, making it much more luxurious and well-suited.

Here are the completed norigae, pouches, and daenggi! I loved making my own special souvenirs with traditional materials and techniques. If you're looking for a unique experience in Bukchon, don't miss the norigae-making class at Danha Hanbok!
