How to eat sundae (Korean style sausage)
to enjoy it! Each Korean district has different style of dipping sauce, and even Jejudo has special type of sauce. I heard from my local friend that they had their own style in home town, and he was shocked when he found that other areas didn't eat like he did. Gangwon-do and Chucheong-do locals usually eat sundae with salted shrimp. Salted shrimp's taste takes away the sundae's smell. It's much different from the Jeju style of soy sauce and mustard, isn't it? 11번가(Seoul, Gyeonggi-do) Locals of Seoul and Gyeonggi-do likes to eat sundae with salt and pepper. For foreigners this style might be too much, since it doesn't hide the original taste of sundae. I recommend that you try it if you are familiar with Korean style and sundae. 11번가 (Jeolla-do) Jeolla-do (Jeonju, Gwangju)likes to eat it with pepper paste with vinegar. Its sour and spicy taste is good for hiding fishy smell of fish or meat. It also goes very well with sundae sauce. 11번가(Gyeongsang-do) Above picture shows you the Gyeongsang-do style sundae sauce. It's called makjang and it has pepper, garlic, sugar and other spices by your preference. I tried it and makjang's sweet taste makes the sundae's smell much better to taste. 11번가(All Korea) Universal way of eating sundae in Korea is to have sundae with tteokbokki. Tteokbokki sauce goes perfect with sundae and every Korean's love this style of sundae. If you have only stayed in Seoul, you must be familiar with salt and pepper for sundae, but there are so much other ways of eating sundae in other areas of Korea. You can choose the sauce according to your taste and preference. This posting was about How to eat sundae (Korean style sausage). Celebrate EXO Xiumin's Birthday Together At This Birthday Cafe
Here is a photo they took on the way in. They decided to snap a photo for the memories of visiting this cafe. A photo of Xiumin welcomes you into the birthday cafe. They were surprised by two things when they first walked in. First, the cafe only played EXO songs on loop and second, the hand sanitizer had a photo of Xiumin's face on it. The sticker has a photo of him and a statement that reads "my precious Aeries, (Exo-L's fan base) don't forget to sanitize your hands!". I thought this was really clever and a nice addition! Safety is always first. What really left an impression was the menu of this cafe. Aside from their regular cafe menu, they also offer a special 'Xiumin's cafe menu' for a limited time! Every menu item has the letters "XIU" incorporated, so I thought that was really smart and cute! Also, as you see in the photo, the macarons are all characters that Xiumin has been told he looks like- such as a hamster, cat and squirrel. How cute is that! Even I internally screamed a bit when I saw the characters because they were so adorable! Here, they ordered Xiu-mericano (Xiu + Americano), Xiuberry latte (Xiu + Strawberry Latte) and two cookies!! They wanted to order the macarons but they said that it was sold out. If any of you reading this are planning on going to a birthday cafe we definitely recommend going early! That way, you can really enjoy the full experience before things start selling out. My friend commented that if you are an EXO fan you MUST take a photo like this with the hearts so they did snapped it again to get the perfect shot Anyways, they also got the Xiumin cup holders! The cup holder has a printed image of Xiumin with the message "I believe all your moments will shine", I asked my friend about it and she said that it's something that he tells his fans. 출처: instiz Right behind the photo card, it reads the same message. We're touched that he would say this beautiful thing to his fans and also find it amazing how they managed to make some goodies out of this as well for his fans to enjoy! It's such a beautiful message to tell his fans. They also got some FREE goodies besides the cup holder! I wanted to keep some for myself because the illustrations are so cute but my friend who is an EXO fan claimed it all for herself. The strawberry latte that my friend ordered came in this plastic bottle! There is an illustration of Xiumin on this bottle and her friend really liked it! She said that after finishing her drink, she is planning to wash the bottle and use it as an interior prop for her room which is a really great idea. Also, the drink was delicious as you could taste the fresh strawberries! Aren't the cookies so adorable? It was too cute to eat, but they did do a taste test and it was amazing! After drinking and eating the desserts, they had a look around the cafe. The cafe itself isn't too spacious but they made the most out of the space! There were these massive photos hanged up! There were small photos that filled the room as well! My EXO-L friend really liked these photos 😊 They stacked up the cup holders for decoration, and there were a lot of balloons everywhere. It really felt like I was invited to his birthday party and she got excited! There were a lot of mirrors placed around the room, which makes taking photos an essential! She even got one with Xiumin! Isn't the doll of Xiumin on the left so cute? I think this is the best photo spot just because of how adorable the doll is! We even got a video for those that may be curious, there were a lot of people so they couldn't get much in it but hopefully you get the overall vibe of the place! That wraps up today's cafe tour with us! I hope you had just as much fun as we did! I just followed my friends to the birthday cafe but I had such a fun time! She enjoys visiting cute cafes but it was even better when the whole place was decorated with handsome photos of idols and excited fans. Source: Wikimedia Next time you visit Korea, if there is an idol you are a huge fan of, definitely visit one of these birthday cafes if they have one! Or, if there is a birthday cafe of an idol you are desperate to go, but can't, let us know and we'll visit it for you! We'll leave a great, detailed review for you so it feels like you're there with us😘 I'll be back next time with more fun and exciting content!...

Visiting Birthday Cafes Dedicated To Heartthrob Cha Eun-woo
We first ordered a drink before looking around. The menu was decorated with 'planet no. 330,' referring to Cha Eun-woo's birthday which is on March 30th, which was really cute. There were a total of three drinks exclusively for the birthday cafe: Chamericano (Cha Eun-woo + Americano) 4,500 won Cheonglyangmin Ade (Cha Eun-woo's real name, Lee Dong-min + Peach ade) 6,000 won Nunuret Latte (Cha Eun-woo's nickname Nunu + Chocolate Latte) 6,000 won If you order any of these drinks, along with the Nunu cookies as a set, you get extra swag. So, we ordered the Chamericano and Cheonglyangmini Ade Cookie Set! Both the coffee and the ade came in bottles with stickers of his handsome face. After pouring the drink into the ice cup, you can take the bottles home. The americano had a strong taste with less acidity, and the ade had a strong peach scent. They were both very delicious! 😋 Do you see the shape of the ice? Since it is a flower cafe, the ice was in the shape of a rose. It was too pretty to eat! This is how the Nunu cookies looked! My friend said that ASTRO's official character line is called ROROHA, and Cha Eun-woo's character is NOONNOO. The sparkling eyes look very similar to Cha Eun-woo's jewel-like eyes! The bear-shaped cookie on the right had Cha Eun-woo's birthday, 03.30 on it! Both were very delicious butter cookies. Here is the most important thing at birthday cafes! The ! We got cup holders, two 4x6 photos of Cha Eun-woo, four stickers, two photo cards, and a cute picture of him that can be put on a straw. Also, since we ordered the cookie set, we got this mini fan with Cha Eun-woo's face on it. Our friend was extremely thrilled, and so were we! After enjoying our drinks and checking out the goods, we decided to walk around the cafe. Lovin' Her Flower Cafe was largely composed of three main spaces. Starting with the middle, we walked into the room that was on the left of the counter. As we entered, we were in awe. There were pictures of Cha Eun-woo's handsome face everywhere on the walls! It felt like we were touring his museum. These two are were our personal favorites! What do you think? WOW! Isn't it beautiful here too? This was the room on the right. Not only was the ceiling decorated with pretty flowers, but there were gorgeous images of Cha Eun-woo posted on the walls! We felt that each photo captured all of Cha Eun-woo's various charms. The most amazing thing about the room was a looped slideshow of Cha Eunwoo's fancams on a beam projector! In this room, fans were sitting mindlessly, just admiring the screen. Here is the main photo zone at the Lovin' Her Flower Cafe! Our Korean editor took a photo with the mini fan of Cha Eun-woo's face before we moved to the next cafe. CAFE MINIPARK Address: 서울 마포구 어울마당로5길 52 52 Eoulmadang-ro 5-gil, Seogyo-dong Hours: 11:30-21:00 The second cafe we visited was Cafe MiniPark, located near . This is a cafe that specializes in birthday cafes, so be sure to check what is available before you go! They post what is available on their Instagram @ and Twitter @. This cafe is also very easy to locate! First, we walked out of Exit 3. If you walk straight for a bit, you will see a Starbucks. Just walk into the alley right before the Starbucks building! If you walk straight in the alley, you will see a downhill road. At the end of this road, you will see a crossroad! There you will need to turn right. Walk towards the first alley on the left and you'll see Cafe MiniPark on the second floor! Please note that the staircase is on the left side of the building! We couldn't find the stairs at first so we struggled a bit. As we were walking up the stairs we looked to the right and saw a huge banner of Cha Eun-woo! We were pleasantly surprised. In front of the cafe, there were two giant Cha Eun-woo banners that welcomed us in. Maybe it is because ASTRO's official color is purple, but how amazing does Cha Eun-woo look in purple! We ordered drinks the moment we entered. There were two special drinks for the birthday cafe: Nunurikano (Cha Eun-woo's nickname Nunu + Americano) 5,500 won Eun-woo Berry Iced CHA (Cha Eun-woo + Raspberry Iced Tea) 6,300 won Usually, if you order it as a set with cookies you will receive a free film postcard, but since we were a bit late they were all out! So we just ordered one drink each. Here, they gave us the cups and the drinks separately. On the left is the americano and on the right is the raspberry iced tea. They were both delicious. My friend took the bottles with Cha Eun-woo stickers, she was excited about displaying them at home. At Cafe MiniPark, we received so many free goods such as photo cards, stickers, bookmarks, film cards, and more, so we were very happy. We especially liked this film card and bookmark. The back of the bookmark was decorated just like a movie ticket, the amount of detail on these goods was amazing! You could really tell that the cafe paid attention to all the little details to perfect them for the fans. After a while, we decided to look around the cafe. It felt more like a nicely decorated cozy room rather than an exhibition like the cafe before. Instead of hanging huge photos of Cha Eun-woo everywhere, they decorated parts of the room with small pictures of Cha Eun-woo. It was so pretty to see it decorated with the ASTRO's official color, purple. Against a large wall, there was this beautiful display. The top three purple photos are ASTRO's teaser photos for their comeback on April 5! Isn't it super cool? There's even the ROROHA's NOONNOO toy that we introduced earlier. It was cuter to see it in plush form! WOW! There were so many photos of Cha Eun-woo! At this point, we're sure you all are tired of us rambling on about how handsome he is. 😅😅 My friend was too busy taking photos of everything. And we mean, everything! 😆😆 There were a notebook, a pen, and a box in the corner. Aren't you curious to know what this is for? Well, if you write a letter to Cha Eun-woo, and place it in this message box, the fans will make it into a book to send it to him! My friend wrote so many letters, I've never seen them write so much before. They asked us to conceal the content as they were shy, so we guess what they wrote will stay between them and Cha Eun-woo. 🤭 We took one last photo in front of this mirror! Cha Eun-woo's go-to pose when taking selfies is a peace sign, so we imitated him for fun. CAFE VIVID Address: 서울 마포구 독막로3길 28-18 28-18 Dongmak-ro 3-gil, Seogyo-dong Hours: 12:00-20:00 We actually weren't planning on going to this cafe, but since it was so close, we decided to make a quick stop. After walking out of Cafe MiniPark, walk to the alley on the opposite side and you will find Cafe Vivid on the left. This is a takeout cafe, so you have to drink out on the terrace. Our friend got a drink to see what kind of goods they gave. There were two versions of cup holders. One was cute, while the other was fierce. At Cafe Vivid, we received six kinds of goods. Two photo cards, pictures, and wet wipes. The wet wipes were very practical so we really liked them! Even though this is a takeout cafe, the inside was completely decorated like a small museum! It was a lot of fun to look around since the pictures were all very handsome and cute. My friend was busy, once again, taking photos of every single display! In a corner of the cafe, there were various slogans and magazines. Doesn't it really feel like a Cha Eun-woo museum? Our Korean editor took a photo with their favorite picture displayed at the cafe! 😆 Today we visited three different Cha Eun-woo's birthday cafes? How was it? To be honest we were feeling quite tired since we visited all three in one day.😅😅 But we were so happy we received all these free Cha Eun-woo goods! We are going to say this for the last time (we promise) but how handsome is he!?!?! His middle name should just be handsome at this point. Also, ASTRO is making their comeback on April 5th, so if you are interested definitely check them out! 😉 We'll be back with more fun content for you next time. Let us know if there are any places you would like us to visit! If you have any other questions leave us a comment below or send us an email at ! Also make sure to follow us on , , to stay up to date on all things Korea!...

The History Of Hongdae: How This Hub Of Art & Culture Came To Be In Seoul
1990S SOURCE: OHMYNEWS (오마이뉴스) Music culture began to rise in the 1990s. Live clubs starting popping up around Hongdae. Before live clubs in Hongdae, there were "Rock Cafes." But, despite the name "Rock Cafes" they hardly ever played rock music. Instead, they played dance music. This was an earlier version of the dance clubs around today. Source: Seoul & Most of the rock cafes were located in Sinchon (신촌). Sinchon is home to four universities, Yonsei (연세), Ewha Womans University (이화여자), Myongji (명지), and Sogang (서강). Many university students would gather and go to these rock clubs. Source: Love Seoul (서울사랑) In the early 1990s, the city of Seoul placed more regulations on entertainment establishments around university districts. Since rock cafes operated as an entertainment establishment, they relocated to Hongdae. The new location was still close to universities and had less strict regulations. Source: 플랫폼 This is when rock clubs transitioned to live clubs. Live clubs became the hub of all things cultural! Many indie musicians would play these clubs. When Rock World opened in 1993, this culture really boomed. Famous live clubs such as The Drugs, The Jammers, and The Rolling Stones paved the way for music culture to grow. Since indie musicians don't rely on entertainment companies or investors, their rise to fame looks a bit different. Their music was also more diverse including genres like punk, alternative rock, etc. Source: YouTube Channel Crying Nut Indie bands had to audition to play live clubs in Hongdae. Once they were deemed fit for a venue and performed regularly, then they were able to expand genres. The live clubs were small, about 25-30 pyeong (890-1067.5 ft2), so you were able to see these bands for very cheap. One club at the time had the following rules posted at the entrance. "Don't sit and watch," "bodyslam until it hurts (a popular action at rock concerts at the time)," and "make the most of your money." Can you imagine this atmosphere? Source: Street-h (스트리트 h) Another reason Hongdae's music culture flourished is that it was a sanctuary for free-spirits. Indie artists were able to perform their music freely without the judgment of conservative people. Even today, you can find many indie performances in Hongdae. Not only are there the most venues in Hongdae, but many musicians actually prefer performing here because of this culture. We also enjoy indie musicians and attend their shows! But these live club concerts have a much different vibe than other large-scale K-pop concerts. DANCE CLUB CULTURE LATE 1990S SOURCE: 내 손 안에 서울 During the late 1990s, dance club culture took over. In 1992, powerhouse clubs like Golden Helmet (황금투구), Myeongwolgwan (명월관), etc. catalyzed the dance club era. Remember when mentioned earlier in the blog that artists would gather and this influenced Hongdae art culture? Artists would often gather at dance clubs. Source: 내 손 안에 서울 Dance clubs were not just for dancing. Artists of various mediums (art, music, etc) would gather to work. These places deviated from mainstream Korean pop culture. Dance clubs often played foreign music that was difficult to come by at the time. Many young people in search of something new would go to these clubs. Source: 중앙일보 Hongdae's dance clubs were considered the hippest/trendiest places to go. So those who wanted to be seen as "popular" would go often. Thus, the number of people going to dance clubs increased dramatically. Source : dj asia During the early 2000s, "Club Day" was established, with the slogan "Clubber's Harmony." Since March 2001, Club Day has been celebrated on the last Friday of each month for the past 10 years, with the exception of special occasions. Source: bnt News For Club Day, there was a special deal where you can buy one ticket at the first club to visit all the participating clubs. This event became a lot more popular in 2007 when clubs with live bands joined. It felt like a festival where you can party and check out various live music. Hongdae has really become like a playground for all things culture. COMMERCIALIZATION 2000S SOURCE: 내 손 안에 서울 Because of this rich culture, Hongdae is seen as a place of diversity and art. But at the same time. there is a lot of commercialization. Source: Street-h (스트리트 h) Of course, there was commercialization during the 90s, but it did not impede on the existing artistic culture. There was a time where luxury cafes, restaurants, franchises, and cultural spaces grew together and coexisted. But between 2000 to 2010, there was a spike in commercialization because of the government's "street you wish to walk on" initiative. The most symbolic event during this time was the "Duliban Strike (두리반 투쟁)." Source: 중앙일보 Duliban is a restaurant that sells kalguksu near . But in 2009, Duliban was at risk of being demolished because of the development of the Airport Railroad (AREX). The development company only offered 3 million won (approx. 2,700 USD) as compensation. So the owner and their wife protested this development. Source: Street-h (스트리트 h) Not only would this development displace Duliban, but many other cultural spaces. Many artists did not want to see this culture disappear, so they joined in the protest to protect Hongdae. These people protested with music. Every week musicians would gather in front of Duliban and perform live. Source: Party 51 (파티 51) On May 1st, 2010, the 120th anniversary of International Workers' Day, there was an event called New Town Culture Party 51+ (뉴타운컬쳐파티 51+). There were 60 bands that performed and 2,500 spectators that this event. Ultimately after 531 days of protest, the owners of Duliban received reasonable compensation. They also received an agreement that they could continue operating in a similar location. To this day, this restaurant remains in business. The Duliban Strike was an event that really highlighted the issue of the commercialization of Hongdae. Source: 내 손안에 서울 Since then, the gentrification process has only accelerated. The rents have spiked significantly with the influx of pop culture establishing its own roots. Shopping Center Information Research Center (상가정보연구소) found that the rent prices in Hongdae 22.58% from 2018 to 2019. Therefore many live clubs such as Myeongwolgwan and other small businesses have closed or moved to neighboring areas. PRESENT DAY HONGDAE All of these aforementioned events have cumulated to create today's Hongdae. Despite the struggles with commercialization, you can still enjoy diverse cultures. Now, the area referred to as Hongdae has expanded to include Yeonnam-dong, Hapjeong, and Sangsu. Each area has its own distinct appeal. Now we want to introduce these areas one by one. MAIN STREET HONGDAE The area highlighted in red in the map above is considered main street Hongdae. It is also the area that has been most impacted by commercialization. EXIT 9 (홍대입구역 9번 출구) Source: City of Seoul (서울시) Exit 9 is closest to Hongdae's main street, so it is a common meet-up spot! But it is also nicknamed "People's Hell" because there are TONS of people. A popular meme on the Internet Especially on weekends or public holidays, the number of people around seems infinite. It is even more hellish if you are there around the time of the last subway. Tons of drunk people will rush to Exit 9 from various bars to get home. Source: Monthly Chosun (월간조선) Despite all this, people will still go to Hongdae to experience all the fun. SHOPPING An activity common in the main street Hongdae is shopping. There are tons of name brands such as FILA, ADIDAS, and H&M. You can also find beauty shops like Innisfree, Nature Republic, etc.! Source: Mapo-gu (마포구) There are also plenty of small vendors that sell cute clothes and accessories. But beware some of these small shops can be very cheap but the quality may not be great. Learn more about shopping in Hongdae by clicking . BAD RESTAURANTS Source: SBS NEWS There are tons of restaurants and bars in the main street of Hongdae, there may be a couple of gems, but overall the reviews aren't great. Because it is highly commercialized, there are lots of franchise restaurants, so there isn't anything special. However, this is still a popular area for people in their early 20s. If you're looking to try good food in Seoul, we recommend restaurants outside of Hongdae. OUTSKIRTS OF HONGDAE These places are a bit detached from the main Hongdae area. Many small businesses relocated to the outskirts of Hongdae where rents are much cheaper. Each region is unique so let's take a look! YEONNAM-DONG (연남동) Near Exit 3, you will find a place referred to as Yeontral Park (연트럴파크) by locals. This nickname is a combination of Yeonnam-dong (연남동) and New York's Central Park (센트럴파크). The formal area name is Gyeongui Line Forest Park (경의선 숲길). Here you will find many unique cafes, restaurants, and stores. In the past 3-4 years this area has grown! Unlike the main street of Hongdae, there are more small businesses rather than franchise shops. Also, there are plenty of trendy restaurants that are unique to Yeonnam-dong. If you are interested in learning more about this area and what to do, click ! GYEONGUI LINE FOREST PARK (경의선 숲길) Along Exits 5 and 6 of is an extension of the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. Here there is . Like the name implies you can find anything related to books or stationery here. It is so easy to lose track of time while exploring this area and all the small shops. There are also plenty of trendy bars and restaurants which is why many couples will come here for . HAPJEONG & SANGSU (합정 & 상수) Hapjeong is where subway lines 2 and 6 meet.
