Kimbap Cheonguk Recommendations
Korea's biggest kimbap franchise, Kimbap Cheonguk, serves a broad demographic of hungry locals from students to working professionals, with affordable prices, long hours of operation and a large selection of menu.
Honestly, when I first walked into Kimbap Cheonguk, I was extremely overwhelmed by the number of dishes on the colourful menu, which completely blocked my ability to make a decision on exactly what to eat at that time.
*Menu and prices might differ by branch
We've got our list of locals' favourite picks at Kimbap Cheonguk, so make sure you read them below before going!
Jjolmyeon (Spicy Cold Chewy Noodles)
Cold chewy noodle with a thick bed of vegetables and savoury spicy sauce on top. Kimbap Cheonguk's jjolmyeon is especially generous with vegetables and noodles. No wonder it's often talked about on social media!
Special Combo
If you've studied the menu for a while and still want everything, go with the special combo! You'll get pork cutlets, jjolmyeong and kimbap on one huge plate. What a deal!
Special Tteokbokki
Basic tteokbokkis we find on the streets just have rice cake and fish cake swimming in the red sauce, but Kimbap Cheonguk's special tteokbokki generally features dumplings, boiled eggs, ramen noodles and cheese. 😍 Toppings might differ slightly by branch, but one thing is in common, you'll come out feeling stuffed and satisfied.
Cheese Ramen Tteokbokki
Cheese Ramen Tteokbokki is one of the superstars among many Kimbap Cheonguk fans. I'd also highly recommend travellers in Korea try ramen tteokbokki too. Many people might find the sauce super spicy, but the thick layer of cheese on top balances the spiciness.
Kimbap + Ramen
This very classic combo is a must-try in Korea. You get to eat two different things together. Dipping the kimbap into the ramen soup is also a delicious way to indulge this combo.
Tuna Kimbap
We shouldn't forget kimbap at Kimbap Cheonguk, right? Out of many different flavours of kimbap offered, tuna kimbap has to be the most favoured option of all. This kimbap of moist, tender texture is a must-eat at the restaurant.
(Cheese) Pork Cutlet
Regular pork cutlet and cheese pork cutlet are both very popular options. Korean pork cutlets tend to have lots of sauce on top of the meat and very little rice. Try out the pork cutlet and feel free to order extra rice if needed. 🍚
Soondubu Stew
Soondubu can easily be found in Koreatowns all around the world and it's also a very common everyday dish in its origin. Kimbap Cheonguk's soondubu stew has lots of spicy tofu inside. Highly recommended to loyal soondubu fans!
Osam Bulgogi over Rice
The name osam is a synonym of ojinguh (octopus) and samgyeopsal (pork belly). The idea of mixing seafood and pork might sound strange but the two actually taste amazing together! This dish is great for getting your appetite back.
Sizzling Kimchi Cheese Fried Rice
Korea's famous sizzling fried rice can be found at Kimbap Cheonguk too! Melted cheese and spicy kimchi fried to a perfect crunchy texture make a perfect pair. Cheese lovers! Remember this dish.
Army Stew
This dish is another well-known option among foreign visitors. Kimbap Cheonguk's army stew is especially generous with sausages and dumplings. If you're feeling hungry in the middle of the night, head over to Kimbap Cheonguk and get a warm bowl of this comfort food.
Fried Rice Wrapped in Omelette
This is a childhood classic for a lot of Koreans growing up. Lots of locals still crave a plate of fried rice covered with thin layer of omelette on top. Plus, the sweet, savoury sauce makes the taste unforgettable. One downside is that at some locations I feel like the sauce isn't enough.
Fish Roe over Rice
The texture of this delicious dish is very unique. What makes Kimbap Cheonguk's even more unique is the fried kimchi, pickled radish and chopped cucumber creating a very interesting texture and flavour. This is something you can only try in Korea so I highly recommend you try it while here!
