What to Expect
Today, I paid a visit to "Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987," which is situated near Seoul's trendy spot, Central Park. Chicken feet hold a special place in Korean cuisine, frequently savored as a dinner option or a late-night snack. "Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987" is a renowned chicken feet restaurant that even made an appearance on the popular Korean food show, "Wednesday Food Talk."
This place's concept is a retro pocha vibe from the 1980s, in line with the restaurant's name. When you look around inside, you can feel a retro vibe in every corner.
The inside has a cozy indoor feeling, while the outside has an outdoor feeling with a view of the street. It would be nice to sit wherever you want, according to the mood or atmosphere of that day, and enjoy the atmosphere. The editor decided to sit at the outer table today.
As I took my seat and placed an order for the 'Skewered Odeng Chicken Feet (Boneless Broth),' the standard setup was arranged. What caught my attention were the water bottles and glasses, which were presented in a style reminiscent of makgeolli, complete with a kettle and makgeolli cups. These small details added an interesting touch to the experience.
This restaurant serves a complimentary bean sprout broth as a starter. Its refreshing and clean broth complements main dishes excellently, elevating both their texture and spiciness when enjoyed together. As a personal recommendation from the editor, I must say that it's even more delightful to cook the bean sprouts together with the chicken feet later on.
I also ordered some Coconut Makgeolli and Pineapple Soju, which were brought to the table. Chicken feet are commonly enjoyed as a side dish, making it almost essential to have some alcohol alongside. No need to fret if you're not a big drinker! The menu includes sweet and mildly flavored options, which worked out perfectly even for an editor like me, who doesn't handle alcohol too well.
Coconut Makgeolli is a delightful and smooth variation of Makgeolli. Makgeolli, a traditional Korean alcoholic beverage, is renowned for its light and smooth taste. It's a popular choice in Korea, right up there with soju and beer, and it pairs exceptionally well with Korean cuisine. This particular version of Makgeolli, infused with the delightful flavor of coconut, is especially beloved among young Koreans.
Pineapple soju has a slushy texture with lots of crushed ice. They say that they blended the fruit whole, but I can really taste the flesh. The taste of soju doesn't come out at all and it just tastes sweet and refreshing like a pineapple slush, so it's easy to drink.
Now all the menus you ordered are ready. Skewered Oden and chicken feet look amazing.
In addition to the chicken feet, they also top it off with crispy fried chicken skin. The tempura is absolutely delightful when dipped into the spicy sauce. Their oden offerings come in various compositions, and they're known for serving it generously with a rich broth.
They had around 3-4 different types of oden, and they even offered mochi soup. It's not common for a restaurant to provide water rice cakes, so this was a particularly pleasant surprise! When paired with the spicy chicken feet, it not only helps to balance out the heat but also complements the flavors beautifully.
They placed crispy fried chicken skin on top as a topping. The chicken skin is naturally the most savory and delicious part, and it became even more delectable after being fried.
You have the option to order chicken feet boneless, allowing you to savor them in one satisfying bite without the need to separate the bones. However, if you're looking to enjoy the tactile experience of eating, I would recommend going for the bone-in chicken feet. On the other hand, if you prefer a hassle-free eating experience, boneless chicken feet are the way to go! What's particularly noteworthy is that when I ordered chicken feet here, I didn't detect any of the usual restaurant odors that sometimes accompany this dish.
The chicken feet are boiled in a simmering sauce, which enhances their flavor. This makes them a perfect accompaniment for dipping with fried dishes or enjoying alongside rice balls. We didn't order rice balls separately, but I believe they would complement the chicken feet quite nicely!
I recently visited the renowned chicken feet restaurant, 'Cheongnyeon Chicken Feet 1987,' located in Yeonnam-dong. The chicken feet were incredibly satisfying, thanks to their rich and spicy sauce. If you're planning a trip to Yeonnam-dong, I highly recommend paying a visit to 'Cheongnyeon Dakbal 1987'!
