Our Visit
The Gangchon Rail Bike is a one-way railroad turned into a rail bike trail in the middle of Chuncheon, Gangwon Province. If you want to get there independently, ride the Gyeongchun Line from Seoul to Gimyujeong Station and exit from Exit 1.
The rail bikes have set departure times. When you first arrive at the park, purchase a ticket for the next time slot. If there is a lot of time left until the next slot, stop by the cafes and shops next to the ticket booth. The rail bike costs 35,000 KRW for 2 people and 48,000 KRW for 4. We arrived at the park at 12:00 and got a ticket for 13:30, so we could grab a bite to eat before.
The departure times are as follows:
Departure Times | ||||||||
09:00 | 10:00 | 12:00 | 13:00 | 13:30 | 14:30 | 15:30 | 16:30 | 17:30 |
The Gangchon Rail Bike ticket office closes for lunch from 12:10 to 13:00. However, there is an unmanned ticket vending machine that can be used at all times and it is compatible with overseas credit cards.
The kiosk is available in Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese. The navigation of the kiosk is quite simple and overseas cards can be used. Make sure you have your ticket with you at all times until you hand it over to the clerk when you line up for the rail bike!
The notices above instruct passengers not to use an umbrella even if it rains. If it does rain, you can purchase a raincoat at Kimyujeong Mart. The notice also reminds passengers to arrive at least 10 minutes early to the queue. If you are late, not only will you not be able to board the rail bike, your ticket will not be exchanged or refunded.
If you have time to burn before your boarding time, there are cafes and art spaces at the rail park. Take pictures or grab a drink as you kill time! There is a book cafe at the station, right next to the ticket booth, where you can sit and take a break.
You can see the boarding queue from the windows of the cafe. Thanks to the big windows, the cafe is bright and open.
There are many art installations at the rail park station like these ginormous book binds. If you've done your research about Chuncheon attractions before your trip, you may have seen this picture before!
We arrived on time, 10 minutes before boarding time, and there already was a long queue! The guide will explain simple instructions such as keeping at least 10 meters of distance between the rail bike in front of you!
Also, if you bring large luggage, please note that there is no place to store it. There are no coin lockers at Gimyujeong Station, so you will have to bring it with you the entire ride.
The ride was honestly quite a workout. We were pedaling quite hard to not be too behind. Thankfully, there are no uphill sections, so it was perfectly doable.
On the rail bike, you will be able to see the true Korean countryside. You'll feel the fresh air and breeze as you ride along the railway. It's definitely an experience that you won't be able to find in the city.
The main highlights of the rail bike ride are the tunnels! Each tunnel has a different theme. You will be encapsulated in a dark tunnel that is illuminated by iridescent lights.
Make sure to take a bunch of pictures and capture the magical lights! You really feel like you've entered another world when you roll into the tunnels.
After the second tunnel, you'll see a river, which was my favorite part of the ride.
*Remember not to get too close to the bike in front! Also, sudden stops can cause collisions, so keep your distance!
The third tunnel felt like outer space! The green dots looked like stars shining.
When you see the Bukhan River, you're close to the end! The river is quite grand so this is will be one of the highlights of the ride! The scenery is something you won't be able to forget, especially when you ride a bike during sunset.
The last tunnel makes you feel like you're at an EDM festival! Lasers and flashing lights turn the tunnel into a nightclub!
After the final tunnel, the scenery of Bukhan River continues.
When you arrive at the final destination, the staff will help you stop and get off your bike. We boarded the bikes and departed at 13:30 and arrived at Gangchon station at 14:10, so it took a total of 40 minutes! It didn't feel as long as 40 minutes and felt a lot shorter.
There is a shop where you can get drinks and snacks at the rest point. There also is a stall where you can purchase your photos taken in at the photo point earlier on! The photo-only option is only 7,000 KRW which is totally worth it!
Then you get on another train, but this time you can just sit and relax. This ride is approximately 15 minutes long and you can sit in an open car cart or a covered cart.
The final stop is Gangchon Station which was once an actual train station. You can look around the deserted train station and get on the free shuttle back to the starting point.
