Ganghwa Island served as the capital for 39 years during the Goryeo Dynasty due to the invasion of the Mongol Empire, and the Tripitaka Koreana was engraved at the woodblock printing shop here. The royal palace site and castle still remain. We also promoted a reclamation project for food self-sufficiency with the dolmen site designated as a cultural heritage site and the Manisan Chamseongdan, designated as Historic Site No. 136, built to overcome the national crisis. Even during the Joseon Dynasty, as the role of national defense became more important as the entrance to the Han River, a camp was established, and Ganghwa Busa concurrently served as light cavalry horse swordsman. The Byeonginyangyo incident by the French fleet in 1866, the Shinmiyangyo incident by the American fleet in 1871, and the Unyo incident by the Japanese fleet in 1875, led to the conclusion of the Ganghwado Treaty the following year. There is also the oldest Hanok cathedral in Korea. In November 2000, the Ganghwa Island Dolmen was registered as a World Cultural Heritage along with the Gochang Hwagun Dolmen.5
