Places We Recommend In Jeju Island
1. Hyeopjae Beach
Located in Hallim-eup is Hyeopjae Beach, a tourist destination on the West side of Jeju Island that is 1st on many travelers' must-visit list.
Known especially for its waters that seem to have been painted in an emerald watercolor. It is deemed to be the beach with the clearest water in Jeju with many trendy cafes that is always bustling with vacationers.
Due to its shallow waters, it is loved as a vacation spot for family travelers. Nearby tourist attractions include Hallim Park and Geumneung Beach and in front of Hyeopjae Beach is Biyang Island, an islet shaped like the boa constrictor that swallowed an elephant in the Little Prince. You cannot miss the sunset that falls between Biyand Island and the ocean horizon.
2. Iho Tewoo Beach
Iho Teweoo Beach, one of the closest beaches to downtown Jeju, is popular for capturing breathtaking snapshots. The two horse-shaped lighthouses, which represent the Jeju pony, photograph well due to their contrasting colors.
If you visit, you will see many tourists taking pictures of the pony lighthouses. It is especially a sight you shouldn't miss when the sun is setting at twilight. Visit this beautiful beach no matter what time it is!
3. Abu Oreum
Jeju Island has a number of crater-shaped "oreum" created by volcanic activity. Oreum is the word for 'mountain peak' in pure Korea. Currently, it is used only in Jeju dialect. Some oreums are higher than expected, so there are cases where you have to hike for more than 30 minutes. Abu Oreum, however, is an easy course where you can reach the top in just 10 minutes.
4. Seongsan Ilchungbong
Seongsan Ilchulcong, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, is a must-visit destination when you come to Jeju Island. It was named Seongsan, which directly translates to castle mountain, because it was surrounded by 99 rocky peaks that formed from volcanic eruptions, making it look like a huge castle. Also because it is famous for its sunrise, Ilchulbong, which translates to sunrise peak, was added to the name.
It will take you around 1-2 hours to explore Seongsan Ilchulbong. It is a short but steep hike, so wear comfortable sneakers and clothing if you're planning to go to the top. Enjoy the view of the wide ocean horizon, something you can't see in a city like Seoul.
5. Cheonjiyeon Waterfall
Located in Seogwipo, the Cheonjiyeon Falls is the best place to take a walk along a waterfall in Jeju Island. You can take a light stroll by a basalt rock trail that is cool in temperature even in the hot summer, thanks to the density of the trees. Cheonjiyeon Falls is about 22 meters high and is the only waterfall in Jeju that can be visited at night. The waterfall is even more breathtaking in the evening, so make sure you stop by!
6. Camellia Hill
A forest of green with fascinating hydrangeas, Camellia Hill is famous for being the largest camellia arboretum in the East. There are many photo spots where you can take insta-worthy pictures. You feel like you're inside of a fairytale when you are among all the beautiful flowers. A trip to Camellia Hill is worth visiting anytime throughout the four seasons as it is full of bright red camellia flowers in the spring, and blue hydrangeas in the summer. There are also silver grass and pink mulberries in the autumn so don't skip out on Camellia Hill during your visit to the island!
7. Water sports (Submarine, Jet boat)
Enjoy a bit of adrenaline in the middle of visiting other tourist attractions! There are many water sports that can be enjoyed in harmony with nature, such as kayaking in the Jeju waters and riding a jet boat whilst looking at the vast ocean horizons of Jeju!
You can dive into the deep Jeju waters, which is an attraction in inself, in a submarine tour! Why don't you dwelve deep and experience a different side of Jeju island, exploring the coral reefs, cute fish, and boat wrecks that have sunk into the sea?
8. Traditional Markets (Seogwipo Olle Market, Jeju Dongmun Market, etc.)
You can always count on delicious foods and things to see at the market, right? The Jeju Dongmun Market, which is close to the Jeju Interntional Airport, attracts quite a crowd because of its night market. Enjoy delicious foods such as abalone kimbap, black pork skewers, and red-banded lobster menbosha! Also, the Seogwipo Olle Market located in Seogwipo has gimbap and the infamous garlic chicken that you have to make a reservation in order to purchase! Visiting a market is a must in Jeju Island, so don't miss out!
