Lately, DIY ring workshops where Koreans can make friendship and couple rings themselves have become a hot spot! Ring-making is not a common workshop to come across, making it a unique experience! There are two types of workshops, for silver rings and wooden rings. We visited 'Wetwood Studio', a wood ring workshop located near Seokchon Station. Check out our experience below!

We took a visit to Wetwood Studio, which is just a 3-minute walk from Seokchon Station. Wood Studio offers a one-day class for making wooden rings and is a workshop that was created by renovating a jewelry shop in Seoul from the 1980s.

When you enter, the yellow lighting shines softly on the murals, creating a retro atmosphere.

The inside of the workshop is divided into three main areas: the workstation, photo zone, and consultation area.

The workstation is divided into two areas; the initial work is done standing up and the refining work is done sitting down.

This is a photo zone where you can take Insta-worthy photos of your ring with the good lighting once your finished. Also, the staff will take pictures from time to time with the camera while you're working on your ring. The photos will be sent via email later with both original and edited photos!

The consultation area really felt like we suddenly traveled back to the 1980s. You can also take photos here afterwards!

First, you will be provided with a welcome tea. You can choose between a carbonated drink or tea, and the staff will bring it to you. Then, you'll begin counseling!

During the consultation, the staff will go over the workshop process, precautions, and more.

First, decide which finger you will wear the ring on and measure the size.

Next, choose a ring design. You can to use wood from walnut trees, oak trees, maple trees, and dogwood trees. We preferred a more slender and delicate look and chose the maple tree. You can see what it looks like in the photos below!

The design we chose is a material that was recycled from a skateboard made with maple trees, making it a great fashion statement with its color scheme. You can choose the color from the cross section that comes out when cutting the skateboard, but please note that the available colors may vary depending on the wood inventory! When choosing the shape of the wooden ring, there are two options: the flat-shaped wooden ring or the round-shaped wooden ring.

This is a really fun and unique part of the process! You get to experience a payment process that was used back in the 80's here in Seoul! You'll write the name of the participant and the class type on the payment form. They even provide a fountain pen for you to use!

Then, you can select your name from the stamps to use on the payment form. If you don't have a Korean name, you can ask the staff to help you choose one!

Stamp to approve the payment, and then it's time to move on to the ring making!

First, make a hole in the wood piece that you chose.

Don't worry about not doing this part well, because the employee will help you out!

Next, sand down the rough parts using sand paper. The employee will do this part for you, as it may cause injury if done incorrectly since your hands may come into contact with sharp objects. However, you'll be able to use the sand paper machine later!

There is a vacuum cleaner connected to the machine, so the dust particles won't be an issue!

Then, use a compass to draw a circle that is about 2.5mm larger than the hole. This is the thickness of the actual ring that you will be wearing.

Don't be alarmed if your drawing is crooked or bent, the staff will touch it up for you!

The next step is to remove the unnecessary parts using a bandsaw. As cutting with a saw can be dangerous, it's important to take your time and cut carefully.

Then you can bring the ring back towards the sand paper device and create a more ring-shaped design by making it more circular.

You will only need to sand the edges and the staff will assist in creating the intricate circular shape!

Finally, it's time to use the wood lathe. First, put the ring on the device and move it from side to side to shape the ring.

The second step is to polish the inside of the ring to make it a little smoother. Once you've done this, your job is complete and the staff will refine the design further!

Finally, you will finish the ring by coating it in an oil gloss. By coating the ring in oil, the color becomes darker in an instant, and the design you chose is finally complete.

The texture is just right - not too thin or thick! It really feels more meaningful when you make it yourself.

Then, you can move on to the photo table and take a picture of the completed ring. The calendar, desk clock, and payment forms create a super retro feel!

You will also be given a pouch that contains oil, sandpaper, and business cards.

If you came as a couple, you can take a photo like the one above or hold hands with the ring on.

The jewelry box is also made of wood and boasts a high-quality structure that opens with magnets. Don't the wooden ring and the wooden jewelry box go so well together?

You can take various photos in the photo zone like this!

You can get creative with your poses! Many like to include a pose where the ring is visible or pretending like the CEO or staff are signing the payment form you wrote earlier. If you want a unique and fun experience, come to Wetwood Studio!
