Dongchun Circus, Korea's first and only remaining circus troupe, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Once boasting over 270 members, the troupe now has around 30, yet they continue to dream of a new beginning. Established in 1925 by Park Dong-su, Dongchun Circus has been a pioneering comprehensive entertainment company in Korea, providing joy and hope during the Japanese colonial period with nationwide tours. Despite challenges over the decades, including competition from television and a devastating typhoon in 1985, Dongchun Circus remains a cultural and tourist attraction in Daebudo, Ansan, drawing 150,000 visitors annually. However, the troupe faces challenges such as limited support and recruitment difficulties, with no Korean members for the past seven years. The current head, Park Se-hwan, who joined in 1963, plans to preserve the legacy by establishing a circus academy and museum. The theater's honest and awe-inspiring performances continue to captivate audiences, transcending mere entertainment and showcasing the resilience and potential of the human spirit.
