Stopped by a duty-free shop during the APEC conference and even got to try a candle-making experience!

On this trip to Jeju Island, my plans were actually pretty casual, mainly to relax, enjoy nature, and eat well. But unexpectedly, during a free moment I accidentally wandered into a duty-free shop and stumbled upon an APEC-related event that was taking place. It was a fresh experience for me, and it added a special surprise to the trip.

When it comes to Jeju's duty-free shop, many people probably already know it’s actually quite large, and it’s more than just a place to shop, the whole space is also very comfortable. Inside, besides the wide array of brand counters, you’ll also occasionally see exhibition areas, so shopping isn’t just buying things, it also feels like a cultural experience.

When I went this time, the conference hall upstairs was holding an APEC meeting. Although I couldn’t attend the formal sessions, they had set up some small exhibitions open to the public, so travelers like me could still feel the atmosphere of the meeting. There were displays showcasing different countries’ cultural features, including small handicrafts, photo descriptions, and even interactive experiences. For someone like me who doesn’t usually have many chances to encounter international conferences, it felt really special, like my trip suddenly expanded to a more international perspective.

What impressed me most was the candle-making experience they had prepared. I originally thought it was just a simple exhibition, but I didn’t expect to actually make something. An instructor guided us on site, briefly explaining the steps to make a candle, then let everyone choose their favorite colors and scents, and finally we completed our own pieces by hand. I chose a fresh scent with a hint of herbal notes, and though the finished candle was small, it felt very meaningful. In that moment I realized the most precious part of travel isn’t what you buy, it’s the experience you take away, and later on, the candle’s scent can bring those travel memories back.

Besides the hands-on activities, there were also some interesting exhibition displays. For example, they showed特色產品 from APEC member economies, like tea, handicrafts, and even introductions to digital technologies. Although the scale wasn’t very large, it was put together with care. For ordinary travelers, being able to visit an exhibition while shopping really felt like a pleasant surprise.

The whole vibe that day was special, since I knew an international conference was actually happening upstairs, and outside the venue you could see a lot of media and delegates, which made me feel like I had a little connection to such a large event. That feeling is rare, because on most trips you’re just seeing the sights and visiting attractions, and it’s uncommon to happen upon an international-level event.

Back at the duty-free shop itself, of course I have to share a bit about the shopping. Jeju’s duty-free shops carry a full range of brands, from cosmetics and designer bags to alcoholic beverages, you name it. I wasn’t exactly there for a shopping spree this time, but I couldn’t help picking up a few small things, since prices are better than city boutiques, and there are some limited-edition items that feel like you’d regret missing. Plus, halfway through browsing you can join an exhibition or try an interactive experience, which really lifted my spirits.
I feel the biggest gain from this trip wasn’t just what I bought, it was getting to experience a different side of Jeju. My previous impressions of Jeju mostly stayed with its natural scenery, black pork, and green tea fields, the more touristy elements, but this time, because I happened to encounter the APEC meeting, I saw that Jeju also has a very international side. Being able to combine cultural exhibitions, interactive experiences, and shopping made the trip much richer than I had expected.

The best part of travel is that in those “no plans” moments, you often run into unexpected surprises. If I hadn’t popped into the duty-free shop that day, I wouldn’t have known about the activities inside, and I definitely wouldn’t have had the chance to make a candle myself. Looking back now, that little detour became a particularly memorable highlight of my Jeju trip.

Finally, a small tip for friends who will be going to Jeju: if you have the time, consider visiting the duty-free shop, don’t just treat it as a place to buy things, because you might, like I did, happen upon special events or an exhibition. Sometimes travel is about leaving a little space for surprises.
