In recent years, Korean alcoholic beverages made from wheat, such as wheat makgeolli (a traditional Korean rice wine) and wheat soju (Korean distilled spirit), have gained renewed interest. Historically, wheat was used in Korea primarily during times when rice was scarce. During the 1960s to 1980s, due to rice shortages, makgeolli was made mainly from wheat. Nowadays, while rice-based makgeolli is more common, some traditional breweries still produce wheat makgeolli and premium wheat soju. These offer nostalgic flavors or new experiences for different audiences. The market now includes premium wheat soju like 'Jinmaek Soju', based on historical recipes, providing a taste of Korea's rich history in alcoholic beverage making.
