On the afternoon of my trip to Korea, I went to a hanbok rental shop called Gung Kanunyo and tried on hanbok, it was amazing!!
🇰🇷💕🩷❤️‍🔥
It was chilly enough that day that hanbok felt just perfect!!! 🇰🇷🇰🇷🥰🩷
When I first walked in, they spoke to me in Chinese, but I’m Japanese so I didn’t understand, lolllll 🥺 After that they properly spoke to me in Japanese, lol 👍🏻
Anyway, this shop called Gung Kanunyo supports Korean of course, and also Japanese and Chinese, so I guess they thought I was Chinese and started in Chinese. 🤭
Here’s how it went after entering the shop, first they explained about hanbok and told me what I could choose and from where to where. Then you choose your hanbok! First you pick the skirt part, the chima!! There were lots of colors like pink, red, blue, green, yellow, and more. There were so many different embroidery designs too, and every single one was sooo cute!!!!! 💕💕💕💕 If you counted all the hanbok, I feel like it would be thousands of outfits in total!!!!

Some of them are separated by rank, with different options like gold accents or see-through styles. The hanbok you can choose changes depending on the price. Next, you choose the top with the long sleeves!! There were lots of different kinds, and since I chose a pink skirt (chima), I picked a white-and-gold top. After that, I changed clothes and the staff helped me get dressed. The staff member was so cute too 🫶🏻🤭🥰🩷 She was apparently a Japanese exchange student in Korea, and still a college student! She said she was working part-time at Gung Kanunyo!! Hanbok are like Japanese kimono in that there are lots of ties you fasten inside, I think that’s a big feature. Also, you wear something like special innerwear underneath. Of course you don’t take off your own underwear, you wear it over that.
Then they did my hair too!!!

There were so many styles to choose from♪♪♪♪ I picked one that I thought would match my pink hanbok!! They braided my hair and added decorations at the end, they put on lots of butterfly clips, and finally they finished it off with a red ribbon. ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 The staff originally brought a pink ribbon, but I thought red would look better with a pink skirt, so I asked if they had red, and they changed it to a red ribbon!
I think that alone made my back view look really pretty!! My mom took lots of photos of me!! I even thought, maybe I look kind of cute? 🤭🤭🤭 After that, I touched up my makeup a little by myself and headed to Gyeongbokgung! To get to Gyeongbokgung, we took the subway from the station closest to the shop. When we arrived at the nearest station and got to Gyeongbokgung, there were so many people wearing hanbok!!! If you go to Gyeongbokgung wearing hanbok, admission is free, so I absolutely recommend going in hanbok!!!! 👍🏻👍🏻 I went with my mom, and she wore a red-and-black hanbok to Gyeongbokgung! It looked great on her!!

When we got to Gyeongbokgung, there was a gate guard at the entrance wearing hanbok, so we took a few photos next to him!

He was so cool… 💕 By the way, the guard didn’t move at all and just stared at one point. So professional! After that we walked around the palace grounds. While we were strolling, we heard traditional music, and we got to see something like a parade, a procession where a king in hanbok and his attendants came forward in a line. It was like what you always see in dramas 🤭🤭 After watching for about 10 to 20 minutes, we went back to exploring the grounds.
We took tons of photos there, and we got to see such beautiful scenery. The grounds were huge, and there were lots of traditional buildings lined up!!!!!

It felt like time travel, like I’d become the main character in a K-drama!!!!! While we were walking around, there was a big pond, so we asked a Korean person to take a photo of the two of us. The person we asked was an older person, but I was able to speak in Korean and get them to take our photo, and that made me really happy! I think it’s super useful to understand even a little Korean in situations like this 🇰🇷🤭😀👋
Also, when we were like “Okay, let’s head back,” another older Korean woman in a group said “Yeppeuda” to me. “Yeppeuda” means cute or pretty, and it made me so happy to hear that, so I made sure to say “Komawoyo” properly as thanks. It means “thank you”! 💕😭🤩
You can tell here too, if you understand even a little Korean, you can pick up positive comments about yourself and all kinds of information, so I’m really glad I studied by watching K-dramas!!!!
As we looked around the palace grounds, I felt like traditional Korean architecture has some parts that are a bit similar to traditional Japanese architecture, like, yep, Asia 🤭, but it also feels different from Japan, and being able to walk around in hanbok in that setting honestly made me feel like I’d become Korean, and I was really, really happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We finished exploring in about 1.5 to 2 hours, and then we went back to the rental shop, Gung Kanunyo!!
By the way, I think one hairstyle set cost around 2,000 won. You can also rent shoes and bags. The hanbok rental itself was about 2,000 yen, so around 20,000 won. It’s a good idea to book online in advance while you’re still in Japan 👍🏻 Sometimes it’s discounted too 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 It’s surprisingly affordable, right!
Then you go back to the rental shop, change, and head home!! 🫡
One thing I regretted after doing the hanbok experience was not taking photos at a photo booth (puri) 🥺🥺🥺 Since you’re wearing hanbok, I really think you should definitely take photo booth pics too. 👍🏻 It’s also so appealing that you can get the real “Life 4 Cuts” there. Some hanbok rental shops even have a photo booth place right next door, so definitely check!!
Even after getting back to the hotel, my hair and makeup stayed in place, and it helped me remember what a fun experience it was!!!!! I really think you should try wearing hanbok, get your hair styled too, rent a bag, rent shoes properly, and go to Gyeongbokgung! 🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷 By the way, I didn’t rent shoes, because the hem hides your feet anyway, so I thought it wasn’t necessary. If you want to make it more authentic, I think renting shoes is a good idea!! Also, around Gyeongbokgung there are lots of places where you can rent hanbok, so I think it’s best to look it up and book in advance♪♪♪👍🏻 If I get to wear hanbok again on my next trip to Korea, I want to pair a pink hanbok with a see-through material, rent shoes, rent a bag, and do an updo hairstyle for a more grown-up look!!! This time I only went to Gyeongbokgung, but I want to see streets lined with hanok, so I want to go to more places too. Hanbok is something I absolutely want you to try on when you go to Korea!! I want you to experience it at least once in your life!!!!!!!!!!
