When you come to Jeju Island, if you’re flying into Jeju International Airport, you can easily fit this into your itinerary either on arrival or before departure. It’s only about a 10-minute drive from the airport!
This time on Jeju Island, we planned “龍頭岩” + “龍淵吊橋” as one stop on our trip.
The two spots are close to each other, about a 5-minute walk, so it’s easy to visit them together. Along the way you’ll see coastline views, volcanic rock, a stream valley, and a suspension bridge, all very Jeju Island.
Especially if you’ve just landed and don’t want to go too far yet, this is a perfect way to kick off your Jeju Island trip.
📍Jeju Island 龍頭岩

This volcanic rock formation that looks like a giant dragon rising out of the sea is one of Jeju Island’s most iconic coastal sights.
It’s super convenient to get here from Jeju International Airport, about 10 minutes by taxi, or under 30 minutes total by bus plus walking.
The first time you see 龍頭岩, you’ll probably think it’s genuinely unique.
A vast stretch of deep black volcanic rock reaches out toward the ocean, and the highest section looks like a dragon’s head stretching toward the sea, which is why it’s called “龍頭岩.”🐲
The rocks here are a geological landscape left behind by Jeju Island’s volcanic activity. Over a long period of time, waves and wind eroded it into the shape you see today, and that’s why, standing on the shore, you can really feel Jeju Island’s distinctive volcanic island terrain.
But to me, the most captivating part of 龍頭岩 isn’t just the “dragon head” itself. The waves crashing up against the rocks are spectacular too. It’s great to stroll around nearby along the coast, where the black volcanic rock and blue seawater create a striking contrast.
Standing here in the sea breeze and watching the waves roll in again and again feels incredibly soothing and relaxing.
It’s also free to visit, with no complicated route or admission process, making it a great choice for your first day arriving on Jeju Island!
While researching, I also came across a legend about 龍頭岩.
One story says a dragon stole a jade bead from the 漢拏山神. While fleeing, it was struck by an arrow shot by the enraged 漢拏山神, fell at the seaside, its body sank into the ocean, and its head turned skyward and became stone. Another version says a white horse that wanted to transform into a dragon and ascend to the heavens was captured and instantly turned into rock.
The legends add a romantic touch, but geologically speaking, 龍頭岩 is rock formed by volcanic lava, then shaped over time by wave action and wind erosion.😆
So when you visit, you can admire the legendary “dragon head” while also taking in one of Jeju Island’s most representative volcanic landscapes.
📍龍淵吊橋

After leaving 龍頭岩, you can keep walking to the nearby 龍淵天橋, it’s very close, you’ll be there in five minutes!
龍淵吊橋 offers a completely different view from the coast and volcanic rocks at 龍頭岩.
From the bridge, you can look down into the stream valley below.
It’s hard to believe this kind of natural scenery is actually right in Jeju City, not far from Jeju Airport. (If you find the right angle, it seriously looks like a scene from a K-drama!🤩
The first time I went, it had rained and the weather wasn’t great, so the water looked a bit murky, which was a shame. Luckily, the second time was a beautiful day.
The suspension bridge isn’t especially long, but when you stand in the middle and look down, with rocky cliffs dropping on both sides, it still feels a little thrilling.
If you’re afraid of heights, try to avoid going when there are lots of people up there, otherwise it can sway quite a bit.
Also, in April there are cherry blossoms nearby and huge fields of canola flowers, perfect for taking tons of photos!
