Exploring Seoul Through Food, Neighborhoods

When I planned my Seoul trip, I didn’t want to create an itinerary that was only about checking off famous tourist attractions. I wanted to experience different parts of the city, try Korean food, explore neighborhoods, do some shopping and see what everyday Seoul feels like.
What I ended up with was a trip that was a combination of food, culture, shopping, beauty and neighborhood exploration. Each day had something different, and I enjoyed seeing how much the atmosphere could change from one part of Seoul to another.
One of my first stops was Gwangjang Market, which was a great way to begin my Seoul experience.

I wanted my first experience in Seoul to involve food, and a traditional market seemed like the perfect choice. Walking through the market, I could see different food stalls, people eating together and vendors preparing food. The atmosphere was busy and energetic, and it felt very different from the more modern parts of Seoul that I visited later.
For me, food is one of the best ways to understand a place. Instead of simply taking pictures of a famous attraction, sitting down and trying local food gives me a chance to experience the city in a more personal way.
Gwangjang Market also made me want to explore more neighborhoods instead of staying in just one area.
After the traditional market experience, I spent time exploring Gangnam.

Gangnam felt completely different from Gwangjang Market. The streets were modern, busy and filled with cafes, restaurants, shops and beauty businesses.
I had several appointments during my time in Seoul, including a hair appointment and beauty appointments, so Gangnam became part of my everyday itinerary rather than just a place I visited for sightseeing.
I liked being able to combine appointments with exploring the surrounding neighborhood. After an appointment, I could walk around, look at shops, find somewhere to eat or simply observe the people and city life around me.
This was one of the things I enjoyed most about Seoul: I didn’t always need a major attraction to make a day interesting.
Sometimes walking through a busy neighborhood and stopping somewhere for food was enough.
Another day, I visited Namsangol Hanok Village, which gave me a completely different experience.

After spending time in modern Gangnam, seeing traditional Korean architecture was a nice change of pace.
The hanok buildings and quieter surroundings created a very different atmosphere from the busy commercial areas. I enjoyed walking around and taking in the details rather than trying to rush through the visit.
This was one of my favorite things about exploring Seoul: different neighborhoods can feel like completely different cities.
You can spend part of the day surrounded by modern buildings, cafes and shopping, and later find yourself looking at traditional Korean houses.
I also spent time exploring Myeongdong, another part of Seoul with a very different atmosphere.

Myeongdong was a fun place to browse shops and experience the energy of one of Seoul’s well-known shopping areas. I also visited Shinsegae, which added another side to the shopping experience.
I wasn’t looking for a huge shopping list. I preferred walking around, looking at things that caught my attention and seeing how different the shopping areas felt compared with the neighborhoods I had already visited.
I also stopped by Kyoto Store and picked up some postcards.
Postcards are one of my favorite types of travel souvenirs because they are small, easy to pack and still give me something tangible to remember a trip by.
Food and neighborhood exploration were the main parts of my trip, but I also wanted to experience something that Seoul is well known for: its beauty and self-care culture.
During the trip, I had a hair appointment, visited Abijou Clinic, and had a skin analysis at The Bom.
These experiences gave me another perspective on Seoul. Beauty businesses are not limited to one tourist attraction or one shopping district. They are part of the everyday city environment, especially in areas such as Gangnam.
I also liked that these appointments could be combined with exploring the surrounding neighborhoods. Instead of making an entire day about one activity, I could visit an appointment and then continue exploring the area, find food or browse nearby shops.
What I Enjoyed Most About Seoul:
I experienced:
🍜 Food — exploring Gwangjang Market and enjoying Korean meals
🏙️ Modern Seoul — walking around Gangnam and experiencing its cafes, restaurants and shops
🏮 Traditional Seoul — visiting Namsangol Hanok Village
🛍️ Shopping — exploring Myeongdong, Shinsegae and local stores
💆 Beauty & self-care — hair, skincare and beauty appointments
💌 Small memories — picking up postcards along the way
The trip didn’t feel like I was constantly moving from one famous attraction to another. Instead, I had time to notice the differences between neighborhoods and enjoy the city at a more relaxed pace.
