When I planned my first DIY trip to Seoul, I honestly thought Seoul was all about shopping, great food, and cafes, I had no idea it was also home to a huge attraction like Seoul Zoo (Seoul Zoo).
Seoul Zoo is located inside Seoul Grand Park in Gwacheon City, and you can get there easily on Subway Line 4, it is super convenient. It takes about 40 to 50 minutes from downtown Seoul, making it perfect for a half day or full day trip. If you have more time, you can also pair it with the nearby Seoul Land for a full day of fun.
As soon as you enter, you will spot the large entrance sign for Seoul Zoo. Surrounded by lush greenery, it feels completely different from the busy city, and even before you start exploring, you can already feel a relaxing vibe.
Because the zoo is truly massive, I recommend grabbing a map right away, or simply taking a photo of the guide information. The animal zones are spread out with different routes, and if you do not plan ahead, it is easy to walk for hours and end up back where you started.
I thought the route planning was really well done. Whether you are visiting as a family or traveling independently, you can easily choose animals to see based on your schedule. There are also clear signs along the way, so you do not need to worry about getting lost.
If you want to save energy, it is best to plan your route from the top and slowly work your way down, it feels much easier than walking uphill the whole time.
One of the most popular experiences at Seoul Zoo is the sky lift.
Sitting on the chair as it slowly moves forward, you can look out over all of Seoul Grand Park and the lush mountain scenery, the view is wide open and beautiful. It is also one of those attractions many visitors make sure to try.
The lift moves at a gentle pace, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery. You can also see parts of the animal areas from above, which gives you a completely different perspective.
Especially on a nice day, with a bright blue sky above and green trees covering the mountains, the whole scene feels refreshing and calm, adding an extra sense of leisure to your trip.
While walking along the path, I immediately noticed a super eye catching giant tiger display.

Seoul Zoo is not just about displaying animals, it is divided into different themed zones that make the whole visit feel more like an adventure. As you make your way down, you will keep discovering little fun details along the way, which makes it great for a slow stroll.
When I arrived at the deer area, I happened to see a spotted deer sitting quietly on the grass and eating.
Compared to some of the more energetic animals, the deer felt delicate and relaxed.
The zoo provides relatively spacious areas for the animals, so they look like they are living in a natural way instead of being confined to small enclosures, and that really left an impression on me.
As you continue walking around, you can also tell the zoo puts a lot of effort into animal care and maintaining the environment.

The biggest charm of Seoul Zoo is how it combines the natural environment with its animal exhibits. The grounds are huge, with trees, lawns, and mountain views everywhere, so even on weekends it does not feel overly crowded.
Strolling along the paths, you can enjoy the scenery while slowly watching different animals. Instead of rushing through like at some zoos, you can truly enjoy the pace of the day.

This visit to Seoul Zoo left me with the strongest impression not just because of the animals, but because of the relaxed atmosphere throughout the park. From looking out over the green mountains, to the giant tiger landmark, to leisurely walks past animal enclosures and exhibition halls, every part of the day felt completely different from the rhythm of the city.
