Amazing experience at a Korean makeup shop

One of the experiences I was most looking forward to on my trip to Korea was getting my makeup done by a professional at a Korean makeup shop.
The main goal of this trip was to attend a live concert by a Korean idol I have supported for a long time. Since I was making the effort to visit Korea, the home of it all, I wanted to be a different version of myself on concert day, so I booked a Korean makeup shop experience, something that is hard to do in Japan. I had tried a Korean makeup shop in Japan before, but it was not really my style, so I was a bit nervous. Still, I wanted to experience the real thing at least once, so I found this site and made a reservation.
Korean idol makeup is known for being natural yet glamorous, with a finish that brings out clear, luminous skin and a beautifully defined, dimensional look. I had admired it for a long time after seeing makeup videos on Instagram, so I was genuinely excited to have a professional do it for me.
I was a little nervous on the day of my appointment, but as soon as I walked in, the staff greeted me with warm smiles, and the cozy atmosphere immediately put me at ease. We started with a consultation, where they asked in detail about my skin type, how I usually do my makeup, the vibe I like, and what kind of finish I wanted. If you prepare photos of the style you want, it is much easier to communicate. I told them, “I am going to a Korean idol concert, so I want makeup that looks good in photos and stays in place for a long time.” The staff then suggested a look that would keep a natural glow while also holding up against sweat and humidity, even considering the venue lighting and photography.
Once the makeup began, they started with skincare, and it was done incredibly carefully. In Japan, I often relied on layering foundation to cover things up, but in Korea, I really felt how important they consider building a great skin base. Because they moisturized thoroughly and prepped my skin condition before moving on to base makeup, I was surprised at how naturally beautiful my skin looked without applying a thick layer of foundation. Even with just small amounts layered on, it covered pores and uneven tone so nicely, leaving my skin looking clear like bare skin but still dewy and radiant.
I also learned a lot about how to use concealer. Up until now, I tried to cover entire areas that bothered me, but with Korean makeup, they used small amounts only where needed, which kept everything looking natural with no heavy, cakey feel. They also did shading and highlighting not across the whole face, but by carefully adjusting the placement to match my individual bone structure, so my features looked more three-dimensional. I was truly impressed by how naturally the shading blended in.
For eye makeup, they worked while checking my eye shape and even the slight differences between my left and right eyes. They layered several flattering, skin-toned eyeshadow shades to create natural depth, and for eyeliner, they extended it just a bit at the outer corners, giving a soft, gentle impression. What stood out most was the under-eye “aegyo-sal” makeup. I had tried doing it myself before but could never make it look right, and I realized that simply changing where you place the shadow and how you apply the shimmer can make your eyes look bigger in a very natural way. They even asked, “Do you like sparkly looks?” and added a bit more glitter for me, which made me so happy. They also applied false lashes, then carefully arranged my lashes one by one, and I was amazed at how much the overall impression can change just from using an eyelash curler and mascara properly.
They chose blush and lip colors to match my skin tone and the outfit I was wearing to the concert. The shades gave a healthy flush without being too bold, bringing a cohesive feel to my whole face. For the lips, they layered a few colors to create a gradient, giving me that distinctly Korean vibe that is hard to achieve on my own.
During the session, they did not just apply makeup, they carefully explained everything, like “why we choose this color,” “the order to apply products,” and “what matters most for long-lasting wear.” So it was not only getting my makeup done, it also became a time to learn Korean makeup techniques. Whenever I asked questions, they answered kindly, and I had such a fun time throughout.
Another thing that truly impressed me was that they told me not only the product names, but also the exact shade numbers and item codes. For anything I was curious about, like cushion foundation, concealer, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, blush, and lip products, they let me take photos one by one so I could recreate the look by buying the same items after returning to Japan. The staff encouraged me by saying, “If you practice at home, you can do it the same way,” which made me really happy. By listening to the explanations and watching their brush techniques and movements, I was able to gain so much valuable information that will help me even after I am back in Japan.

When the makeup was finished and I looked in the mirror, I could not help but smile. It felt completely different from my usual look, yet strangely it did not feel unnatural at all, it was like they brought out the best in me. Even though it was not over-the-top makeup, my whole face looked brighter, and I was thrilled with how photo-ready it looked. Thanks to professional techniques, I felt like I discovered a new side of my own charm. The smooth, even look of my skin in particular was amazing!
Unfortunately, it had been raining since the morning, and the humidity was high, so I worried a little that even after getting my makeup done, it might melt off. But even after traveling to the venue, walking outside, and taking the train, my base makeup barely moved. The concert venue was packed and full of heat, and during the show I sang along, cheered, and sweated, but even then, my makeup did not break down significantly and stayed looking beautiful.
The concert ended at night, but when I checked the mirror, it looked almost the same as it did in the morning, with hardly any creasing in the foundation or smudging around the eyes. When I looked back at my photos, my skin looked great in every shot, and I was honestly surprised by how satisfied I felt with the finish. Since it stayed intact all the way until night even on a rainy day, I was reminded once again just how high the skill level is in Korean makeup and how good the cosmetics used are.
At the concert, I was able to see my favorite Korean idol up close and had such a happy, unforgettable time. I think I was able to join that special day with real confidence thanks to the beautiful makeup I had done at the shop. I also felt more confident than usual when taking photos, which made my travel memories even more special.
Through this experience, what I felt most strongly is that makeup is not just about making your face look pretty, it is something important that gives you confidence. I was also deeply impressed by Korea’s high level of skill and the thoughtful service, offering makeup suggestions tailored to each person’s bone structure, skin type, and purpose. The staff were kind from start to finish, and not only their techniques, but also the way they stayed attentive and supportive really stood out.
After returning to Japan, I have been buying the cosmetics they recommended and using the item numbers I noted down to look for the same products. I have also been practicing little by little, like how to build the base makeup, how to draw the aegyo-sal, and how to create a lip gradient. Doing my makeup has become more fun than before, and even my daily getting-ready time feels more fulfilling.
This Korean makeup shop experience became one of the most memorable parts of my trip. Not only was I able to enjoy a special event, the concert, in the best possible way, but it was also a valuable opportunity to learn about Korean makeup techniques and the thinking behind them. Beautiful makeup that stayed in place until night even on a rainy day, detailed counseling, and the kind support of even sharing product codes for the cosmetics they used, everything about it was extremely satisfying. If I have the chance to visit Korea again, I would love to try a different makeup style and discover a new version of myself. And as I incorporate what I learned into my everyday routine, I want to keep enjoying the charm of Korean makeup from here on out.
