The Seokjojeon program at Deoksugung Palace turned out to be much more memorable than I expected. I thought it would mostly be a historical tour with explanations about the building, but the entire experience felt much more immersive and emotional than that. The program blended history, architecture, music, and performance together in a way that felt elegant and thoughtfully organized from beginning to end.
One of the first things that stood out to me was the contrast between Seokjojeon and the traditional wooden palace buildings surrounding it. Seeing a European-style stone building in the middle of a Korean palace felt unique and visually striking. The historical explanations throughout the tour also made the experience more meaningful because they explained how Seokjojeon represented Korea’s efforts to modernize during the Korean Empire period. The explanations never felt too heavy or difficult to follow, so it was easy to stay focused and enjoy the tour the entire time.
I was also especially impressed by the guide leading the program. The guide was clearly very knowledgeable about the history of Seokjojeon, and the explanations were detailed without feeling overwhelming. I also noticed how fluent the guide’s English was, which made the tour feel very smooth and comfortable for international visitors.

The interior of Seokjojeon was beautiful as well. The chandeliers, antique furniture, decorative details, and European-style rooms created a completely different atmosphere from traditional Korean palaces. Everything felt elegant and refined, and it was easy to imagine how luxurious the building must have felt during the Korean Empire period.

One of my favorite parts of the program was the live classical music performance held on the balcony of Seokjojeon. Listening to live music while looking out at the palace scenery felt almost unreal. The fountain in front of Seokjojeon, the surrounding traditional palace buildings, and the music all blended together beautifully. The desserts and coffee provided during this part of the program also made the atmosphere feel even more relaxing and sophisticated.

The musical performance held inside Seokjojeon near the end of the program was another highlight for me. The actors’ singing ability, emotional acting, and vocal power were honestly incredible. Some moments were emotional enough that they almost made me tear up. Even though the musical itself was performed in Korean, English scripts and translated song lyrics were provided throughout the performance, so it was easy to follow the story and fully enjoy the experience.
The final part of the program was also surprisingly memorable. Before leaving, visitors could choose decorative hat accessories and take photo booth pictures as souvenirs. Since I went alone, I asked one of the staff members wearing traditional court attire if she could take pictures with me, and she kindly agreed. Having photos together with someone dressed in traditional court clothing made the experience feel even more special and personal. Visitors also received a small souvenir dish featuring the imperial plum blossom design associated with the Korean Empire, which made the program feel even more worthwhile.

Overall, the Seokjojeon program felt far more than a simple historical tour. The combination of historical commentary, beautiful architecture, live music, performances, desserts, and small interactive moments made the entire experience feel thoughtful and memorable. It was one of those rare programs that felt educational, emotional, and visually beautiful at the same time, and it left a much stronger impression on me than I originally expected.
