'Trip to Korea' - Seokchon Lake

In Seoul, when the cherry trees start to bloom, the whole city takes on a different feel. But among all the popular spots, it was Seokchon Lake, tucked away in Songpa District, that surprised me the most. Maybe because I did not expect that kind of beauty just steps from an amusement park.

Seokchon Lake is actually made up of two basins connected to each other, forming a walking loop of about 2.5 kilometers. Along the entire path, hundreds of Yoshino cherry trees (왕벚나무) line the banks, creating a tunnel of pink and white blossoms that is especially striking on sunny days. And behind this cloud of petals, Lotte World Tower rises to 555 meters, offering a dizzying contrast between the delicate grace of spring and the power of modern architecture.

I visited Seokchon Lake at three different times of day, and each had its own charm. In the morning, the atmosphere was soft and almost intimate: a few Korean joggers, families strolling at an easy pace, and petals beginning to fall, carried by the breeze. The morning light filtered through blossom-heavy branches, giving the cherry trees an almost pearly glow.
By midday, the crowds grow noticeably. Dozens of food stalls set up around the lake for the duration of the festival: tteokbokki (떡볶이), fish cake skewers, sesame pancakes, artisanal ice cream, and of course, coffee in pink cups decorated with cherry blossoms. The festival creates a lively vibe without ever feeling overwhelming, because the lakeside path is wide enough for everyone to find their own space.

But it is sunset, and especially after night falls, that delivers the most memorable scene. The cherry trees are lit with soft string lights, and their reflections dance on the lake’s surface. Lotte World Tower, also illuminated, stands out in the background. Families picnic by the glow of lanterns, and the air is filled with cherry blossoms mixed with the sweet scent of street snacks.
For photography lovers, Seokchon Lake is a true playground. The best angles are found on the small bridges that cross the canal connecting the two basins: you can frame the blossom tunnel with Lotte World Tower in the background, and capture the reflection of everything on the calm morning water.

The festival also hosts special evening events with light installations on and around the lake. Paper lanterns are sometimes placed along the banks, and in some years, light projections dress up the cherry tree trunks. Check the official program for the Seokchon Lake Festival (석촌호수 봄꽃축제) with Songpa District.
A little-known tip: the view from the elevated café inside the shopping mall next to the lake offers a bird’s-eye view of the cherry trees and the lake at the same time, especially spectacular when it is windy and petals lift into the air like pink snow.
