Discover Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)

If you’re visiting Seoul, Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is one of those places you just can’t skip. It’s that futuristic, spaceship-looking building you’ve probably seen in photos, but there’s way more to it than just cool architecture. Here’s what I learned from my own late-night adventure there—and some tips to help you make the most of your trip.
🎉 Events & Exhibits: DDP is a hub for events, so check online before you go—you never know what might be going on. When I visited in late August, Seoul Beauty Week and Seoul Light were in full swing, and the whole area felt alive. Even if there’s nothing major happening, the DDP Museum is worth a stop (bonus: a lot of exhibits are free!). It’s located inside the iconic “earpod”-shaped building, and many of its exhibits are free!

🛍️ Shopping & Coupons: Make your visit even better by grabbing the DDP Super Pass, a coupon booklet available at: the airport information desk OR the DDP Visitor Center. Look for coupons labeled “STAMP TOUR.” Get stamps from stores like Hyundai, Doota, and Mimi Line. Redeem them at the DDP Visitor Center for fun prizes like stickers, socks, or a bag!
Here’s how I used it:
1. Hyundai Mall (First Stop)
Head to the first floor to get a coupons booklet with vouchers worth 2,000–5,000 KRW and discounts up to 10%. Check the fine print—some deals require a minimum purchase of 100,000 KRW.
2. Doota Mall (Next Door)
Open later than Hyundai Mall, perfect for night shopping. Drop off all your previous purchases at the 5th-floor Information Desk for a hands-free shopping experience. Locker rental for the first 2 hours is free, with a small fee for extra time. I ordered gimbap at the food court, which costed me only 2,500 won after using a coupon. There is another coupon for $10,000 won off after 8 pm shopping. On the first floor, they have the Nike store, which is popular for its design lab where you can personalize a shirt, hat, or jacket.

3. Mimi Line & NyuNyu (Late-Night Shopping)
These nearby stores offer cosmetics, accessories, and clothes at wholesale prices. Super Pass perks: 10% off at Mimi Line and 5% off at NyuNyu. They open until 5 AM—perfect for night owls!
💡 Tip: The subway closes around midnight. If you shop late, plan for a taxi or night bus ride home.
💰 VAT Refunds: Both Hyundai Mall and Doota Mall offer VAT refunds. Bring your passport to make the process easier. I did encounter while at Doota Mall that Circle Lensware won't give me VAT refund since I used the 20% off coupon, which was odd but the information desk personnel couldn't help me resolve this confusion. I guess it depends on the shop owner. I didn't have any problem using $5,000 won off New Balance store with VAT refund though.
ℹ️ Visitor Information: The DDP Visitor Center is located outside, near the stairs by Exit 1 of Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (Line 2). It’s a great resource if you need directions or help during your visit.
