Must-eat food on this Jeju trip — [Mackerel Sashimi]: visiting the restaurant '미영이네'

On this trip to Jeju Island, what I looked forward to most was trying Jeju’s local specialty, raw mackerel sashimi. It’s considered a Jeju specialty because although mackerel is common, it’s extremely sensitive, and it dies easily when its environment changes, which makes preparing raw mackerel sashimi very difficult. However, because Jeju is right by the sea, it’s almost the only place where you can taste truly authentic raw mackerel sashimi.

“Miyeongine (미영이네)” is considered the most famous raw mackerel sashimi restaurant on Jeju, among both locals and visitors. We waited a long time here, about an hour in line, because the space is smaller than you’d expect, so the wait tends to be longer. The price is fairly reasonable, a small portion of raw mackerel sashimi plus seafood soup costs only 55,000 KRW.

The owner recommended eating it with roasted seaweed and a marinated celery and chopped scallion side, and it really was delicious. We also tried Hallasan (한라산) soju like Jeju locals do, it paired perfectly with the raw mackerel sashimi and reminded me of Japanese sake I’ve had in Taiwan. In the end we drank a bit too much soju and felt a little weak the next day, but that just shows how well soju goes with great food.
Although the restaurant isn’t near the main tourist spots, we still made it there successfully by following the bus route on Google Maps. That said, you do need to stay focused while navigating on the way. All in all, this visit to Miyeongine (미영이네) let us experience Jeju’s one-of-a-kind flavors, it’s absolutely worth trying.

On this Jeju trip, we tried so many local foods, and the raw mackerel sashimi at Miyeongine (미영이네) was easily the most unforgettable dish of all. The sashimi was incredibly fresh and flavorful, and paired with soju and a variety of Korean side dishes, it was truly irresistible. This Jeju food journey helped us understand Korean cuisine more deeply, and also gave us a taste of the locals’ unique dining culture.

On this Jeju food trip, besides the memorable raw mackerel sashimi at Miyeongine (미영이네), their seafood soup is also absolutely worth mentioning. The rich broth with plenty of seafood tastes even better alongside the sashimi. We also tried Jeju’s local Hallasan (한라산) soju, and together with the sashimi and seafood soup, the flavors complemented each other beautifully. This combination wasn’t just satisfying, it also left us with an even deeper impression of Jeju Island.

After returning to Taiwan, we still found ourselves missing Jeju’s food, especially the raw mackerel sashimi we had at Miyeongine (미영이네), it was impossible to forget. We hope we’ll have the chance to set foot on Jeju again in the future, try even more local specialties, and share our food experiences with locals.
In short, if you’re planning a trip to Jeju Island, I strongly recommend making sure you try the local specialties. Whether it’s the seafood feast at “Seongsan Ilchulbong Jeju Haenyeoui Jip (성산일출봉 제주해녀의집)”, the spicy braised mackerel at “Jaldo Restaurant (잘도(Jaldo) 식당)”, or the raw mackerel sashimi at “Miyeongine (미영이네)”, they’ll all treat your taste buds to a true feast. Wishing you a wonderful trip in Jeju!
