- Jinyeon is a one-hour Korean traditional music performance held in central Insadong. The program covers ritual music, court music, solo pieces, folk songs, and contemporary arrangements.
- The show moves through different musical styles in sequence. First-time listeners can follow the progression without prior knowledge of gugak.
- Performances take place in a pungnyubang, a traditional salon-style room where audiences sit close to the musicians. You can ask questions and interact with the artists after each section.
- The host introduces each piece in Korean and English. The venue sits in the middle of Insadong's shopping and dining area.
- The performance runs about 60 minutes. Shows start at 11:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 4:00 PM.
Performance Program
The show has three parts. Each section features a different type of Korean music.
- Part 1: Gilje(Opening Ritual)
- A ceremonial performance that opens the show. Musicians play traditional pieces meant to bring good fortune.
- Part 2: Jinyeon(Court Music)
- Music from Korea's royal court and scholarly tradition.
- Jeongak: Formal court music from the Joseon Dynasty
- Sanjo: Solo improvisational pieces that showcase individual musicians
- Part 3: Harmony (Folk & Contemporary)
- Traditional folk songs and modern Korean music.
- Minyo: Songs passed down among everyday people since the Goryeo period
- Contemporary arrangements: Folk songs reworked with modern instruments
