Korea's first permanent market, continuing a long tradition of 120 years. This market was opened in 1905 by a group of Joseon merchants who established Gwangjang Co., Ltd., and is said to have inherited the legacy of Baeogae Market from the previous Joseon Dynasty. Unlike Namdaemun Market, where Japanese people exercised management rights, it is said to have been run purely based on Joseon capital. It was originally called Dongdaemun Market, but changed to its current name, Gwangjang Market, in 1960. The name ‘Gwangjang’ means ‘to gather and keep widely.’ It is located right next to Jongno 5-ga subway station. It is famous for distributing dry goods and used clothes, but recently it has become world-famous as a Korean food market, attracting many foreigners. There are a lot of shops selling various foods such as bindaetteok, pancakes, pig's feet, sundae, raw meat, and fried chicken. However, since the types of food sold at each store are similar, I feel that the variety of food is less than I expected. The food tastes good so it's worth a visit.

The place I went to is Eunseong Raw Fish Restaurant in Gwangjang Market. The signboard looks like this, but the menu only sells one thing: Dongtaetang (dongtaetang). Because the business is good, there is a wait during lunch hours. The interior of the restaurant has become much cleaner due to remodeling. It's gotten bigger. The owner and grandson here are kind and do good business. You must drink alcohol directly from the refrigerator. Food is boiling in a boiler on every table. Drunk people seem a bit dangerous when they bring out alcohol.
