Creatrip: On the Hook

Do you know the expression "on the hook"? Urban dictionary describes it as "A person who is "on the hook" will be overly infatuated with another person. The person who is the desired generally takes little notice (and often complete advantage) of the person who is on the hook." Today we will learn about how Korean males or females think about being "on the hook."

In 2019, a survey was conducted to 394 unmarried men and women (190 males and 204 females) by Duo, a Korean matchmaking service company. One out of every two unmarried men and women(52.3%) answered that they've been "on the hook." They felt the relationship wasn't clear and honest.

The percentage of women’s experience in "on the hook" was 54.9%, and men's was 49.5%.

But what was more interesting was, when asked if they have put someone on the hook, 18.6% of women and 19.5% of men said they have.

So what kind of characteristics do those people have? The most common answer from the survey was "People who have lots of opposite-sex friends" with 38.1%. The second most common characteristic was "People who compliment you habitually" with 18.3%. The third most common characteristic was "People who meet you whenever they feel like it" with 13.2%. And lastly, 11.4% have answered, "People who never talk about serious relationships."

What do unmarried men and women think when they see people on the hook? 35.8% of men said, "I never want to be associated with that kind of person," and 39.2% of women said, "I feel sorry for other people who are on the hook." On the other hand, 3.2% of men and 7.4% of women said, "He or she must be really attractive."

The survey also includes "What would you do if you were on the hook?", and 62.3% of women said, "Stop interacting with that person immediately." However, 37.9% of men said, "Meet a few more times and decide whether to continue the relationship." Overall, 12.2% answered, "He or she will be different with me, so I'll keep seeing that person."

A Duo official remarked, "There is also moral in love. Putting someone on the hook is an act contrary to morality. Not one person will be happy to find out that someone they liked turned out to be just putting them on the hook. If you find that you are on the hook, I urge you to stop the relationship immediately. Even if the relationship progresses, there is a high likelihood of having problems related to the opposite sex."
